K&N 77 Series

I put this thing on my 08 F150 5.4 and not ragging on K&N but this particular unit is complete junk! Mike Troyer is gonna be doing all of my mods for me and I will be going with AF1 through him. May take a little while because I will be driving to Virginia but I will post pics ASAP.

Can you elaborate? Why is it junk/what is the problem?

Just a few days ago you were ecstatic and posted a gain of 23/30??

There is nothing wrong with the K&N. You just jumped in without doing any research. There is post after post in this forum warning people that you should be very cautious about an aftermarket intake on the 3V engines, without custom tuning. You run a high risk of running lean. A little research would have informed you, so you could have made an educated decision on which steps to take when and what product would suit your needs best. Troyer is very good as are a couple of others. He will get you straightened out, provided you have not burned a valve or piston.

A little research would have also told you that there was no way in hell that you would get those kind of dyno numbers from just an intake. I was going to try to give some advice earlier but when I saw how you were going about it and saw those dyno numbers, I didn't figure my advise would be taken well. Learn from the experience, reseach and take a little more time. Hope it works well with Troyer.

Yea your exactly right man. Just inexperience on my part. I only had the CAI on for 1 day so I would assume to believe that everything would be ok with my valves and pistons. Now you have me worried:o

Hopefully you are ok, if you didn't thrash it too much and for very long. The popping you heard may have been severe pinging from running lean. Too much air for the fuel mix.

If you get tired of waiting on Troyer, try Justin at VMP or Bill at Power Hungry Performance. Any one of them can fix you up.

I running a 77 series and a Magnaflow cat back and made excellant power and have never had a single problem with a CEL or any problems of that matter. And I don't have a tune I think you jumping to conclusions way to fast, I also think that your buddy that installed it for you doesn't have a clue in what he was doing I have had three 2004+ F-150's and on the first one I had a AF1 intake on it and on the second one I had a 77 series intake on it because of a killer deal I got and dynoed both trucks with the same options at a local shop in town and guess what.....they where within 1 or 2 peak horsepower of each other and the torque curve was way better down low(where you need it with a truck) with the K&N 77 series intake. I had a tune done with the AF1 intake to be on the safe side. My air fuel/timing curves where awesome with the K&N intake. I spent about six hundred bucks on the programmer with custom tunes/ AF1 intske and made the same power with a K&N intake/NO TUNE!!!!!!!!!Wish I would of saved the extra money I threw out the door The truth off the matter is any intake will net you power over stock. They reach a max power/torque, there are several good brands, but it is your money......if you think a certain intake will get you a ton of extra horsepower over the other........then go that route but when it come down to it most of the intakes do the same thing, your not going to get 30+ horsepower out of a air intake, sorry to burst your bubble The best thing for me is now I don't have to switch back in forth on tunes, I constantly had to switch back and forth between my performance tunes and towing tunes and it got really annoying.

If i had to do it all over again I would skip the air intake and go staight for the blower/supercharger set up, you'll love the horsepower gains then

Good luck with your new set up

Sorry you had a bad experience with your first CAI. I am running a K&N 77 series with no issues at all. I had Troyer custom tune my truck with my 77 series along with Magnaflow exhaust and all other type of goodies. Hopefully your next setup will be what you are looking for.
