I'm a little confused about AF1 3" and 3.5"...

I'm sure I've read on this site many times about 3" and 3.5" AF1's. I just got my AF1 and I ordered a 3" from Troyer for my 2005 5.4 3v. Well I'm confused because first of all, the inside diameter reads 3.37" at the cone end, secondly the AF1 listed on the AF1 web site for a 2004 5.4L is part number 16418 (which is what I got), but their site says its a 3.5"?

Now I know I've read here that a 3.5" works with custom tunes, but not stock computer which is why I wanted a 3.0".

So what the heck is going on here??? I'm so confused

Call Troyer. I'm pretty sure there should be an inner 'sleeve' on the 3.0".

Could you have gotten a leftover 3.25" somehow?

I called AF1. Basically all their kits start out as 3.5" and the insert at the MAF sensor makes it a 3". Their website doesn't really indicate that, but at least I know for sure that I have a 3".

I was concerned because I seem to have lost alot of HP after installing this thing. It feels slower and a friends G-tech confirmed it. But I guess I should be patient and wait for the adaptive to re-learn the airflow and then measure with the G-tech.

It's frustrating because the Xcal3 didn't work so good either. I got detonation, so had to put it back to stock. $700 and neither are working so good.

Who's tunes are you running? I've heard the canned tunes from the XCal3 aren't the best...

I've ordered Troyer tunes. So I have to tolerate the Xcal3 canned for now. I called SCT today and they told me to retard the timing by -1 on all RPMs and I did and I don't hear the pinging anymore. So now I have the Xcal3 with canned tunes and a AF1 3" and I honestly don't feel a difference at all in performance. I certainly feel the more agressive shifts, but that's about it. I'll put in better quality gas on my next tank and maybe by then the adaptive computer stuff will have "adapted" to my new mods.

I'm pretty disappointed so far though.

The 3" Af1 has a insert that narrows the intake down to 3". Look inside its about 7" long and you can see the narrowing in the tube. Check out my photo gallery for mor pics.

Like you i though i got the wrong one also. I guess if you wanted to you could try to pull the insert out and have a 3.5" AF1.

Don't fret too much, Troyers tunes will be a WORLD of difference from what you're got now. I'm running his 93 Octane tune and it rocks. Don't give up hope yet, give TP a chance to show you what your truck can really do!

PS: Thinking about it, I'd probably just unload the XCal3 tune and run stock until you get the TP tunes.

Spike, like NCSU said, you will likely see a night and day difference when you load your Troyer tunes. I know I did and I went through the same thing you are now then got the Troyer tunes and now have 6 tunes from him as well as several from VMP. Custom tuning is the way to go. Also I have the 3 and 3.5-inch AF1 and really like the 3-inch better for my purposes which is everyday driving with MUCH improved power over the entire rpm band.

So which are your favorite, TP or VMP? Also, why so many tunes?

Does the 3.0" AF1 really have more power than the 3.5"? I've got the 3.25" AF1 and had thought about one day bumping up to 3.5" to get a few more HP... Mine is also my daily driver.

All my Troyer tunes are for my AF1's where all my VMP tunes are for the stock intake so of course not a fair comparison. Justin's tunes have always impressed me for full throttle performance and all out speed where I love the partial throttle and low end power of Mike's tunes. Again, the apples to oranges make a comparison just yip yap. I had the 3.5 AF1 and emailed tunes from TP which were great then Mike tweaked them on his dyno. Recently I purchase the 3-inch tube and Mike revised my tunes for the smaller inside diameter. I don't think the 3 makes more power but it doesn't seem to give up much if anything to the 3.5 (3.25 or whatever the i.d. is) and it seems to have a silky smooth idle over the 3.5 which could be a tad bit rough sometimes, especially as the weather is getting hotter. If I were going to the drag strip on a cool night I'd probably slap the 3.5 on just to satisfy my mind but I haven't noticed any power loss just from seat of the pants and the tip in throttle is better with the 3. So overall I like it better so far and it's a little quieter. One of these days I'll probably give Justin a visit and throw it on his dyno since he's not far away, but I'm not really in any hurry b/c I love the way it runs now more than ever and I THINK I'm finally satisfied with it all around. It would be more for the fun of it than anything. So your AF1 is the one without the insert? TP sold me the 3-inch tube for something like a buck and a quarter and had my tunes revised in 3 or 4 days.

I got an early model of the AF1, before they came out with the 3.5". I've heard the difference between the 3.0" and the 3.5" is probably less than 5 HP anyways, so I'm not too worried about it.

I haven't run into any problems with my intake, so I'll probably just keep it as is.

I wonder if there's a way to quantify the low end and part throttle of TPs tunes so that can be compared to VMP. I like WOT as much as the next guy, but the vast majority of my time is spent somewhere at part throttle.

NCSU I don't think there's any way to compare them short of back to back dyno runs on exact same truck under a controlled situation. And even that only tells you full throttle power. There are so many things about the overall driving characteristics that it then becomes personal opinion which as you see is all over the place. They are both very good at what they do.

That's what I'd do. Run a pull with TP, then swap out to VMP and run another pull. Then to be fair, let the truck cool off then run another VMP pull and then another TP pull and average them.

But you're right, that's only good for WOT data.

CAI tube Diameter

Ive been reading a lot of threads about the Af1 3" VS. the 3.5" and questions on running lean. This got me to wondering what the size of my Roush CAI was I just stepped outside and checked the O.D. with calipers and just before the urethane coupler before the filter housing its over 4" . so Im assuming its 4" I.D. Any thoughts on The Roush intake?

no step

I didnt mean to step on your thread , I just thought while the subject matter was pertaining to intake diameter. one of you would be able to shed some light the subject. I have concerns about running lean using this intake with the offroad exhaust and an Edge. Sorry J.B.
