Thumbs up no exhaust system is cheaper and better

i used to have a gibson exhaust system on my 04 4.6L and it didnt sound too great. so i bought a flowmaster exhaust system and while i was about to install it myself, i wanted to hear what my truck would sound like with no exhaust. i started the engine and i hear this amazing and loud, yet really nice, rumbling sound. i thought to myself, "oh, f*ck! im keeping my truck just like this!" i returned my flowmaster kit and all i have now is just no exhaust but still with the cat on. its nice and loud (not loud enough to get pulled over) and believe it or not, my mpg is still the same. i dont know why i didnt think of this before i bought the gibson. i wouldve saved myself $300! even when u floor it, it sounds awesome!

ah hah! see i was the same way. you may not notice it now but that mpg will go down. no much but it will, but even worse; your truck will turn into a big loud slow turd. mine did and i hate the way it performs now. sounds good tho. imo i would suck it up and get some high flow cats and put that flow on. but at least one of us likes the straights. lol

you know, i have no ****** clue y, i just except it for how it is. straights killed my truck and somehow a magnaflow braught it back to life. im no expert but i believe its due to the fact that magnaflows are porferated mufflers which allows exhaus to flow through little holes inside the muffler..... i think.

I don't know, I've heard a few F150s with exhaust cut off before the muffler and it's always sounded like crap. To each his own though.

I'd at the very least run piping the rest of the way. I've got a feeling that cutting it all off like that has to hurt performance somewhat

cutting it off does NOT hurt performance what soever. if you MPG went down its probably because you couldnt keep your foot out of the firewall cause you wanted to hear that sound. i had flowmaster on my truck before and it was horrible, it sounded great but that was about it. i couldnt even get the tires to chirp with it on there. after i chopped it off and started running straight pipes everything changed. my MPG stayed exactly the same. in fact i noticed it was a little better on the highway. and i can spin my tires all day if i want to now

Its more about backpressure then just being straight through.

You will lose performance with straight pipes, but if it sounds good and you like it, then that's all that matters (since it is your truck).

I love how people say a muffler swap will net huge HP and go from no tire spin to burning rubber down the block. Gimme a break people, its a friggin catback.

gotta love the ol butt dyno... its like me saying that my royal purple oil gave me gobs more horsepower... lol probably less than 5hp. muffler systems are weird. like theres a certain length of pipe that performs the best longe or shorter doesn't perform as well altho the diference is again probably 2hp.

You just completely contradicted yourself, first you say straights are going to hurt your performance. Well it would have to be a noticeable decrease to actually hurt your performance. Then you say that a muffler swap wont make a big difference in HP, so which is it? I agree that changing exhaust won't make a noticeable difference your looking at 5-10 hp and 5-10 ft/lbs at most, and on a 6000lb truck you wont feel that at all.
I love my straights, its not just a muffler cut off but I sure didn't loose any performance. My truck would scratch second before the exhaust and it will do it the same now, just check my sig.

Sure you wont feel it, but what about gaining 8 instead of losing 8? Now your talking about a 16 HP difference. THAT is big. Enough to roast tires? No. Enough to notice? Potentially (but not a big enough difference to roast them down the block LOL).

My edge and troyer tunes didnt FEEL any different at WOT. However after timing my 0-60s, i realized there actually was a difference and that the custom tunes were considerably faster. So just because you cannot FEEL it doesnt mean its not there.

All I was doing up there was comparing the exaggerations to the truth, that is all. Thats great that you love your straights, its your opinion on your truck that matters...But if you were to hop on a dyno, i'd put money that you lost power.

Your not going to loose any power, it might move up in the rpm range but its not going away.
