Well don't expect a v8 sound for sure, because anytime you get above about1500-2000 rpm it will start to bumble bee on you. However the best exhaust I could find for my 97 was borla or spintech, I cant remember exactly what model number muffler but they both sound good at low rpm and give a nice rumble. Go to google video and just type in borla v6 and then spintech v6 and listen to some of them, they will probably be on mustangs so it will sound a little different but it should give you an idea.

A muffler will run $60ish and then the install or setup of your choice.

How bad to straights sound on a 4.2L? I was looking at some videos on youtube and it sounded pretty good but it may sound different in person.

Horrible absolutely horrible please no matter what you do don't put straights on a v6 ever.
That should be a new man law, other than a v8 then no straights.
