Muffler swap?

I am new in the exhaust modification catagory and I know this may have been covered before. I want to keep my stock exhaust setup but want to change the muffler only. Looking for just a little more sound without a lot of drone. What setup do you have or recommend? I hear the magnaflows are the way to go but I did some searching and there are so many sizes, shapes, etc. I probably will have to swap back and forth for inspections seeing as I live in MA. Also where could I get a short piece of stainless exhaust tubing to add in as I know the aftermarket mufflers are shorter. Any help would be great!

Why would you need to swap in and out for inspection? You can't have aftermarket parts there?

Are you going to install it yourself? If not, the muffler shop should have the piece of pipe needed.

I have a 18" Maggy in, BTW (5"x8"x18" 2.5" offset, 2.5" center, though I think it might be a little different with the F150s as far as offset and what not). Sounds good

you will not have to go back to stock for inspection. As long as you're not messing with anything from the cats forward you should pass.

I'd go with a 11" Magnaflow over the 18".

I had the 18" SI/DO, dropped Magnaflow all together and X-piped into dual SI/SO Spintech Pro Streets.

I am hearing from several people that if they know there is modification to the exhaust they won't pass it. Maybe I can find a shop that will pass it though. By the way I forgot to list this in the first thread but my truck is a 2006 XLT supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4. Thanks...

from the cats back they cannot fail you...I'm living in Ca and my X-piped Spintechs will pass even the visual.

As long as you have a muffler on there they are going to pass you. Just don't go messing with the cats.

And i agree about Magnaflow if you don't want drone, though pretty much any straight-through muffler won't drone (unless its dumped)
I had a Dynomax Ultra Flo muffler welded into the stock pipe for a while and it sounded great around town, with no drone on the highway.
Just recently cut off everything from the muffler back, and put on a turndown- now thats a different story...

After doing some searching and research, I am looking at the magnaflow part# 11366. It is a s.s. 4"x9" oval 11" long & 2.5" offset/2.5" center. Anyone else have this? How much louder could I expect this to be over stock. I looked at the 14" & 18" also but after searching the forums it seems like some people say that those sizes aren't very much different than stock sound. I don't want to be one of those guys that puts on a muffler and changes it 2 or 3 times before they like it. Like I stated in the first post, I just want it to sound better and not have a lot of drone. I also don't want the truck to sound like a 4cyl or that it has open headers Thanks for the replies...

The stock muffler is 32" long.

I think you will be quite satisfied with the 18" maggie. If you want it a little louder though, go for the 14" round body maggie.

OK... trying to narrow it down now, but starting to get more confused the more I research it. What is the difference between the round and oval mufflers? Is it just for fitment? Also see that these also come in different girth sizes as well. It seems that the round styles are cheaper but will I loose torque/power etc? I am down to possibly a 14" or 11" after listening to some clips, but now not sure if I should go round or oval I at least know that I will probably get a magnaflow stainless steel with 2.5" in & out, just hung up on the size and shape.

the 4" round will be louder than oval...

I stopped at Summit yesterday to pick up a 5x8x18 because I like that sound, but they were out of stock. So I bought a 4" round x 22... it is nice & deep, exactly what I was looking for, but it might be a little too loud for a SUV.

Oval should be considered if you're looking for deep, mellow sound... and round for deep and loud.

EDIT: Magnaflow mufflers btw
