SO why does everyone hate the K&N CAI?

Going through here I see a lot of posts slamming the K&N FIPK, why? It worked fine for me on my 06. Is there some design defect in them?

Also finally had the hood open on my 08, it looks like the stock intake is smaller than my 06's stock.

Because most aftermarket intakes can cause your engine to run lean.

No intake company will tell you that their product will lean out your motor, but ask them for dyno charts with A/F ratios and see if they can provide anything....

Yeah, good point. I figured Troyer would know better. It may not have been super lean, but lean nontheless. Also, he did not badmouth what I had already bought.

Indeed. According to Troyer, some of these 04+ 5.4L have come straight from the factory running on the lean side. When you add an intake to those trucks, you can magnify the problem.

In all honesty, even $500 for a custom tune is cheap when compared to the price of the truck, and the benefits of the tune.

K&N, S&B, AF1...they are all comparable and very similar. ! or 2 hp differences on a stock tune, big whoop.

I have the K&N FIPK and the build quality is superb, and it is also 50 state and CARB legal (unlike others) AND has a lifetime warranty...

Oh, and it ROARs with my Troyer tunes.

K&N has been in the business forever and has always built quality products, i trust their experience.

The difference in HP isn't the issue, it's the leaning out of the A/F ratio. Of course, with a Troyer tune it doesn't really matter what intake you use since the tune should address those issues.

Does this lean condition apply to all f150's or just the newer 04 and up?

Would the combo of a K&N cai and edge cause the 04 fx4 to run lean? I just got an edge put on and was worried about this and today my check engine light came on while running on level 2 for about a week. Would the check engine light be related to this setup?

My K&N did NOT run well when i had the Edge. It droned really bad, especially on the highway and when climbing hills. I couldn't stand it. It would also hesitate and take a huge gulp when downshifting, it scared me with the sounds it was making. It sounded good at full throttle though.

With custom tunes it sounds and performs 500 times better, and I love it now.

yeah same here. it kind of scared me when i saw the check engine light come on when only having the edg for only a week. i put it back to stock tonight. i am really thinking about getting a custom tune from bill since i have only heard good things. will a custom tune fix the k&n/edge problems? where did you get your custom tunes?

I'm running the 3"AF1 and Troyers tunes and haven't had any problems.. love how the truck runs!

But yes, I think getting Bill to hook ya up with customized tuning would be the right thing to do.

And yeah, it's really only the '04+ that are prone to running lean with any sort of mod to the intake. The stock programming seems to be right on the borderline to begin with.

I sold my edge and bought a used Xcal2 and then ordered custom tunes from Troyer Performance. They work wonders over the edge canned tunes.

However, if you want to keep your Edge with the gauges, I'm sure Bill can write you some custom tunes that will work fine and fix your problems.

Primarily the 04+ with the 5.4L 3V engine.

Did you install the intake and edge at the same time? If so, chances are the CEL is for a lean bank (or two), do you have any way of checking the codes? AutoZone can do it for you, not sure if they charge anything.

A custom tune from Troyer will fix the problem. I'd assume Bill could also take care of it for you, but I have no experience with him.

If you wanted to avoid getting a custom tune, the 3.0" AF1 supposedly can be run without any corrective tuning. Of course a Troyer tune does alot more than just correct A/Fs...
