cat back vs muffler

I just got a 07 FX4 a few days ago and am looking at exhaust options. What is the true benifit of going with a system vs just the muffler with my stock pipes? Does the gain of a system justify the several hundered dollars more it will cost vs just putting an aftermarket muffler in place of the factory one?

cat back systems offer very little gain unless you use them with a full exhaust system or other performance parts (custom tuning, cai, high flow cats) if its just sound your looking for welding one of the mufflers on will work just fine. but keep in mind some exhaust systems (roush, corsa, banks) you cant just buy the muffler you hafto buy the entire system.

MPD165 - Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new truck! I'm the first one to suggest a search when it's an easy find (or when someone's just being lazy), but this really isn't an easy search. Larger, mandrel-bent aftermarket pipe allows less restriction, but some will argue that's not necessarily better. Many prefer baffles in mufflers (more restriction) rather than straight-thru designs, for better performance. Maybe someone has tried a muffler and then added pipe and they can chime in with the difference. Your tone should change with larger pipe, also.

FWIW, I just bought a Corsa system and they won't even sell the muffler separately, because they sell systems not mufflers. Marketing?

So MPD165, did you decide yet? You can bring it over to the house and we can work on it...... Not sure if John T will help! I say go with the muffler swap for now, then decide later if you want to do the rest. I don't think the gain with the catback is worth it, however if you have the money......go for it.

I had the factory muffler cut out of my 06 on Saturday and had them weld in a magnaflow SI/SO and kept everything else stock and it sounds freaking awesome. I didn't want anything really loud that would wake up my neighbors but I did want a deep aggressive sounding exhaust. I got exactly what I wanted!!!

Thanks for the input guys. I think for now i'm just going to get a 14 inch magnaflow. Maybe use the money I save on a system and buy some underdrive pullies.
