I'll be the first then. I have a K&N and I'm quite pleased. KN is an open intake though. If you are looking at Volant, sounds like you are looking for a closed intake and might want to consider S&B as well.

I have the Roush CAI, and it made a very noticible power increase, and no lean problems.

FYI - Airaid, and Roush are the same thing.

Posted this yesterday due to a question.

A guy asked
I HAVE A 5.4L IN MY SCREW AND AM PLANNING TO PUT A COLD AIR INTAKE ON SOON. I HAVE LOOKED AROUND AND IT SEEMS VOLANT LOOKS LIKE THE BEST BET. THEY CLAIM BETWEEN 14 AND 18 HP INCREASE AND 2-3 MPG. IF ANYONE KNOWS ANYTHING OR HAS ONE LET ME KNOW. THANKS.
I replied...
I have had the Volant for five months now. Hold long does it take to get the 2-3 mpg? Gotta call BS on the website...It helps a little, but get tune, like the Xcal3, and then you will notice more power. An intake alone is worthless in my experience...
He then asked what was a tune...

A tune man..Its a small computer that takes off your stock computer program. It then uploads either a custom, or a pre program from a company that makes the computer. Most here use the Edge, or the SCT tuner witha custom tune by Troyer. The Edge has a canned tune that can be customed. It sits on your dash and has guages. An Xcal3 has no guages, and can be customized by Troyer. Basically it is just a computer program that makes your truck come to life. They run about 400 bucks. 600 with an Af1 intake. Do not just get the intake. I got my tune from Troyer, becuase he can match it up with my Volant, and not cause a lean condition. Volant says that it will not cause a lean condition...but I had rather be safe than sorry. Plus my truck runs much better with a tune and an intake. The Volant will make the engine roar in conjuntion with dual exhaust. Everyone has there opinion on which combo it better. I have a Volant air intake, Flowmaster dual exhaust, and and Xcal3 tuner with Troyer custom tunes. From what I have read, the best setup is SUPPOSEDLY, a Troyer custom tune with an AF1 intake, and Magnaflow exhaust. I do not have the supposed best, but I am very happy with the results. Do a search for Troyer and Edge...see what floats your boat.

My opinion is that airintakes work at first, then the trucks computer figures out whats going on. In my OPINION, air intakes don't work as well as they should....without a custom tune.

For example, my brother in law bought another Harley bike. This new one had an EFI, and he wanted more AIR, and freeflow pipes. He had to get it remapped....Meaning a new tune on his bikes computer.

Now I know that bikes and trucks are different...but the laws of physics should apply to both. Any one one this forum who tells you different...may be right. Again, just my opinion.

Oh yeah, Volant even said it would not cause a lean condition. Maybe they are right...after the truck computer figures out to let less out.

When dealing with a new 40k truck, I do not want to screw it up...

lets see, the k&n 77, the k&n 57 FIPK, aem brute force, airaid, airaid jr., volant, afe magnum force stage 2, and s&b all fit and work. I would recomend the k&n 57, you get like 16 horsepower gain and you shouldnt run lean.

The 3" AF1 is the only intake kit for the 4.6L that WON't cause a lean condition.

I've been using that since last March and I love it. Very nice growl, better throttle response, no noticeable increase in mpg, but no worse either.

Troyer Performance has dyno tested every intake kit (well, all the reputable ones) and their results say 3" AF1 will not cause lean, every other kit will without custom tuning.

On the other hand you can do like most folks do and install whatever is the cheapest and/or looks the coolest to your eye with no regard to what it does to your engine.

Good Luck!

before you buy that you should look at the aem brute force. it has a dry filter so you dont have to worry about oiling it and has the best filtration. as for the af1 being the only cai on the market that doesnt cause lean conditions i find it hard to believe.

AF1 3-inch

Easy install - solid and safe with great performance... Proven on the dyno, not just a ad claiming a miracle…
