confused about 3.0 or 3.5 af1

Sorry if this has been covered before but I tried searching and couldn't find the answer I was looking for. I have a 3.5 in af1 intake coming and was wondering if I can run it without a tune. I'm pretty sure the answer is that I need a tune like a troyer custom tune (which i plan on ordering very soon) to run the 3.5 but I am confused as to why the official af1 site lists the 3.0 in for the 4.6 liter and the 3.5 for the 5.4 (I have a 2006 screw fx4 5.4 by the way). Thanks in advance for the help

you will need a tune. if you dont get one you risk running dangerously lean. and messing up your engine

IMO you should get the 3.5" and get it dyno tuned at either Troyer or with another Ford experienced tuner.

X2. It will fark up your engine if you run it without a CUSTOM tune, meaning stock or with canned tunes.

Yep, what they said.. lol

The only cai you can be sure won't run your engine lean without tuning is the 3" AF1.

I've been using that since last March, 7 months before getting Troyer tunes. Never a CEL, nice sounds and performance. Even better after the tuning.

ok sorry but im in the same spot here

i have a 2007 5.4 fx4 and i want 2 buy a af1 but i dont have any tunes or chip ? i think maybe in 8 months i will be able 2 buy them but right now only the air intake so if i install de 3.5 i will damage my engine ?

y have to buy the 3" and then when i buy my tunes i have to buy another one ?

and if i install de 3" i dont have to reprogram ? i just install it and enjoy it
how many hp i get from the 3" ?

Do AF1 intakes REQUIRE "custom" tunes?..........

3-inch = NO

3.5-inch = YES

If getting the 3.5-inch, a dyno tune would be best however Troyer sent me tunes via email which ran the 3.5-inch beautifully and subsequent dyno testing showed they were safe with little margin for improvement. Troyer knows this set up well and has dyno tested it many times on our trucks.

I had the same question and got my answer from a person in the industry. The 3.5 will yield more horsepower 4 to 8 from what I was told. IF you dyno the engine and tweak out your AF and other numbers. For the average person who will never see a dyno, running everything from stock programming up..short of major engine mods, would be just fine with the 3". I did go with the 3" on my 07 5.4 (tunes from Troyer due this week) and I have been very pleased with its performance.
