K&N FIPK question

I recently purchased a K&N FIPK cold air induction for my 04 F150, (5.4).I have not yet installed it but am now wondering if I should have maybe bought another brand. It sounds like the K&N makes your engine run lean unless you also install a chip to change the computer. The truck is totally stock as of now and I wasn't planning on doing anything else in the near future as far as peformance or modifications. Any input would be greatfully appreciated. :santa:

04's with 5.4's more often than not run leaner with cais w/o custom tuning-some run lean from the factory with stock air cleaner wo even throwing cel light-i myself would get a xcal 3 and af1 from troyer -he'll tune it for the air cleaner- great combo-www.troyerperformance.com

Troyer custom tuning + AF1 3.5" = 40-50 peak hp

i too have a 2004 5.4L, and also the K&N FIPK.

I ran it on the stock tune for a while but was concerned about running lean. Troyer said the FIPK runs lean in the higher RPMs but stays safe in the lower RPMs.

I did the custom tuning, and it is well worth it. The intake performs great now, no drone and lots of power!

K&N have been around forever and make a great product backed by a lifetime warranty. Plus its 50 state smog legal, unlike many other intakes including the AF1.

I think unless you drive extended periods at like 4k rpm, and you don't, your K&N should be just fine.. Those are high-quality intakes, I'd go ahead and put it on and enjoy..
