Street legal CAI?

Hey guys, just got an 02 FX4 5.4. I've been reading on these forums that the AF1 is the way to go as far as intakes, and I would love to get one but I'm moving to California soon and the AF1 is not C.A.R.B approved, is there anything that can compare that is street legal in CA? Thanks

Just put whatever you want on your truck. When it's time for the smog check, take out your bolt on CAI & reinstall the OEM air box. Or better yet, just get a CARB sticker for an approved CAI, and stick it under the hood. That just might fool the smog tech. He may not even notice that the sticker & parts don't match.

Beat me to it^^^^

Not really sure which ones are CARB exempt as i have never had to deal with that. Honestly for the money your best bet is to get some custom tuning for your truck. That is the best bang for buck mod you could do and it can be returned to stock any time. Also why not just install the AF1 and if you need an inspection just put the stocker back in

shifty_85 it is rare for any CAI to affect the 97-03 motors enough to kick a CEL or need custom tuning caused by a lean condition. That is the 04+ 3valve with that problem.

I have moved to Ca as well and have the AF1. I had no problems getting mine smogged.

go with the K&N FIPK, ive got it. comparable HP gains to the AF1, CARB exempt, and lifetime warranty. K&N has been around forever and have always made a high quality product that you know will last.

Thanks for all the responses guys I like the idea about finding a sticker that shows CARB approval, and even if I have to reinstall factory box for an emissions test, no biggie. I'm not used to all this emissions stuff. I've been living in NM for the last 4 years and its primitive out here because they do not care about safety inspections or emissions tests.

BTW Kevin24, does your AF1 have the heat shrouding around it, I guess it may be hard to tell from that picture but from some of the pictures I've seen it appears that some of the AF1s have the heat shields and some do not?

Go with the AF1!

And from what I remember, mine came with a little blue C.A.R.B. sticker?

Yeah man, I wouldnt worry about it.
You wont get inspected by the cops in a truck. They are too worried about the rice rockets and everything else.
So when it comes time to get smogged, just remove and replace. That may even be too much, you can test it out and if they say no, then you leave and come back with it off.

I modded cars there and lived there my whole life and to tell you the truth it isnt the worst place. Washington State is WAY worse then Cali.
