What you do want is high exhaust gas velocities. The smoother and faster flowing the exhaust (exhaust gas velocity), the more power you're going to make. You want an exhaust system with as little back pressure as possible and as high exhaust gas velocity as possible.

Lets do a comparison.

You're stock exhaust uses a single 2.5" (I'm not sure if that's correct, but for demonstration sake). Lets match that to a drinking straw. An aftermarket/custom exhaust uses a 4" single pipe. Lets match that to a piece of 4" PVC. Blow through the drinking straw at your hand and then through the 4" PVC at your hand. Which do feel more on your hand? You feel the air through the drinking straw more because of the higher velocities. Nothing to do with backpressure.

And nothing beats WOT hp/tq from open headers.
thats a pretty interesing logic there. I can see how thats good for power, but, the back pressure betters the low end torque which is better for daily drivers as NewEdge99 stated. Better fuel economy and some good jump off the line.
