Exhaust pipe diameter

I have a 1998 F -150 with headers, the stock cats and dual 3" pipes (no muffler). I am wanting to get more of a POP POP POP sound. I was told that small diameter pipes would do that. Does the pipe diameter make much of a differenece in sound? If so, what size should I do to 2.25"?

do 2.25 if you want it to pop. 3" wont let it do that.

yeah real small pipes with no mufflers. You will gain some more low eend torque with smaller pipes too. My other truck with 3" true duals only poped once and I got it on video luckally lol

What if I change out most of the pipes to 2.25 and leave the last few feet 3" (I like the look of the bigger pipe) will I have a similar effect to the sound as if it were all 2.25"?

run all the main exhaust piping 2.25" then put on 3.5"x18 tips that should do it. or if you running no tips sure I would say it would be ok to do. not too much of it though 3ft max sure

Just make it all 2.5" and use 3" tips if you must have that 3" look.
