Lean and Mean!

This may have been presented/discussed before, and for those that have been part of this forum for sometime, I do apologize. I have tried to search but have not found anything....(perhaps I am not using the right code word )

Shouldn't any CAI, worth anything cause a lean condition? or does the stock PCM have a certain capacity to deal with a minor increase in air flow.

Cheers

Troyer Performance has dyno tested all of the CAI systems for the 04+ F150s and Mike said that the only 2 that give you a good power increase without causing a lean condition are the AirForceOne 3" and the Airraid. The K&N FIPK is okay below 3000 RPMs but in the higher RPMs makes the engine lean out.

hope this helps.

I guess another way to framne this question is....how much capacity does the stock pcm have to deal with increased air flow? My thought is that is we are, by intalling a cai, trying to get more o2 into the engine will it not create a lean condition?

Whether this lean condition is enough to cause a problem (i.e. trigger the Check Engine light) is another question.

Why would some cai kits cause the engine to run lean? Do these cai, by design work better, to increase air flow?

I hope everyone can see what I am getting at....
