Cutting out the cat's...benefits vs. dowfalls?

Thinking about cutting out the cat's on my 2000 F1 4.6, but wondering if this is a good idea or not. Looking to get more sound but not trying to mess anything else up in the process. Could someone give me the pro's and con's to doing this? Thanks guys!

pros: more sound
cons: loss of low end torque, your truck will smell terrible, you will be illegal, and you will have a CEL.

solution? replace your cats with magnaflow high-flow cats. you will get the sound you want, GAIN power, and keep all the sensors and legality crap.

EDIT: if you are from California, tampering with the cats at all is illegal, even replacing them. high-flow cats have not been approved yet. I know it sucks, trust me.

Yes I am in California, and I thought it wouldn't be a good idea. I was also thinking about the high flow cats...but in doing this would you have to replace all four? I didn't know about not tampering with your cats though. I'm guessing there's not too much leeway around that?

not really. im in the same boat, ive got flowmasters and they sound great, good tone, but i would like more sound. you cant really mess with the cats, and long tubes are illegal. i was considering JBA shorty headers, ive heard they add sound and with a custom tune add some power too.

we'll see.

go with high flow cats, pref. magnaflow. no check engine light, no smell, no hassles when you get it inspected (where i am from, they hook up to the port and if there is no CEL, codes thrown, your fine). i cut out all four and put in 2 maggies and its great. i got a flowmaster super 40 with the high flows on my 4.6. louder, crisper but still deep.
