Need exhaust for 2000 5.4L
Need exhaust for 2000 5.4L
I know nothing about ford trucks and a buddy from work asked me to find out what would be the best exhaust for his truck, its a 2000 model with a 5.4 liter. He wants the sound of dual glass packs and wants it to be loud at low speeds but quiter on the highway and doesn't want to do anything that could harm the engine or set any codes.I think his main concern is keeping or even improving mileage.
I was thinking he should leave the stock cats then add another y-pipe(making and x pipe) then run to dual glasspacks, does this sound like it would get what he's looking for?
Thanks.

Whats the budget like?
Chuck what he's got - the manifolds as well.
Dyna-tech headers , One High flow Magnaflow converter per side 2.5 - 3" mandrel bent piping to the Xpipe. Dual 2.5 piping from the X-pipe - TWO small Magnaflow 14 or 15's SISO (True Duels) - Dumped or straight out the back..
This way, You'll pass emissions and the system will be O2 compliant. NO eliminators needed - Better mileage and gain at least 20hp.

Keeping it simple and cheap, run a Flowmaster cat back with twice pipes out the rear and a 40 series muffler. Not too much will affect codes etc until you start screwing with cats, and even then, the last 2 are a non issue to eliminate. You have to try hard to make these trucks loud to begin with, so even a straight pipe setup or a glasspack muffler will do, raspy when you get on it.

The thing i see from the OP is that he wants it loud while cruising but quiet on the highway right???Well from what i have found you can't have that combination. The more RPM's you turn the louder it will be from what i have found. If you buy 2 magnaflow SI/SO round mufflers 2 1/4 inlet/outlet,$100 for both mufflers. One 2 1/4 inch Magnaflow X-pipe,about $80 you can go from the X-Pipe all the way to the mufflers perfectly straight!!There is enough clearance to make it work with no bends!!!Then all you have to have done is have your factory Y-pipe cut and 2 pieces of pipe bent to go over your crossmember. Then if it is to loud dumped you could always have the tail pipes added in the future.I would go with the 18inch casing muffler by the sounds of what your looking for.I couldn't tell you about the gas mileage but you will pick up a ton of low end power and it will sound great!!Pics in my gallery to show you what i mean.It also will not break the bank for $$$
