Which intake is going to give me the most power???
Is a heat/dust/splash shield or enclosure important? Does it rain where you live? Is it dusty? Do you drive in stop and go traffic? If your answer is yes to any of the above, then you will want to seriously consider an enclosed filter intake from the like of Banks Power, Outlaw Power etc...
Well, I'm not usually in the habit of opening the hood and throwing mud into my engine compartment to prove a point. ( just kidding lol)
That's getting old - I've driven back & forth to Florida from Ontario, many times, in the dead of winter through horrible conditions - and neither my compartment nor my AF1 ever looked anywhere close to that.
Sorry. You need to find another shtick
And you need to wash that compartment it's disgusting.
Granted - serious offroaders often have special needs - including a snorkel. For most of the rest of us? Nope.

x2!!
I've had the AF1 on for almost 4k miles now, rains here all the damn time, at least this summer..
Sometimes downpours that'll slow ya down to 20 mph on the highway.. No problems there.
A couple times a month down a little caliche road for a couple miles, sometimes in the same downpours as above, no problems there. I'll admit after the first few times down that road I pulled the filter and checked the intake tube with a white cotton cloth.. nothing..
So I'm completely comfortable with the AF1 as far as it's filtering ability given the way I drive.
And no, I'm no heavy-duty off-roader.. I'd probably go another way if that's how I drove the truck.
And Bubba, is there anything funnier than a snorkel kit on an H2 driven by a soccer mom who won't even ease over into the gravel next to the left turn lane??

Rain has never been an issue. Dust? Do you really think you're not going to suck dust in through the little hole your enclosed intake sucks from? Any intake is going to suck in dust, regardless if it's closed or not, that's why you have a nice filter clamped to it. I always find it funny when someone mentions that...
Dyno tricks aside, use common sense and $$$ as your guide.
If a manufacturer claims 20 RWHP that is it, a claim. I can play all day on a dyno to show you big increases. The reality is any open filter is going to sound better and offer less restriction than the factory setup.
Cooler air makes more power (especially low end). If a manufacturer has a way of funneling that air in from outside, even better. The stocker breaths from the driver fender, with really no "ram" set up.
That being said, mu outlaw arrived the other day, and seems to be a well thought out piece of equipment, and I don't have to worry about re-oiling filters and loading up the MAF.

very informative thread but after checking out the S&B they dont make a sealed unit for the 97 4.2L. In fact I am having trouble finding a CAI with a sealed unit for my engine. Guess there's not enough demand
. I've seen some with heat shields, but mostly just on one side and along the intake pipe. Guess my search continues

Why in the hell are y'all so concerned about keeping the filter clean? It's a FILTER! Yeah if you're a mudder, get a box to replace the box it came with.
The point of these "CAI"'s is drawing a free flow of air, performance-wise.
Just stop it already with "sealed" vs. "open".. buy whatever the hell you think looks better..
Intakes are like a box of chocolates, pretty is as pretty does.. or something like that..
