Illinois Aftermarket Exhaust Law

Hello,

My buddy and I got pulled over tonight in his cavalier with performance exhaust. When the state trooper heard us go by, he wipped it around and caught up to us and pulled us over. He gave him a written warning for it and told him that it was illegal for all aftermarket exhaust. I was just wonderin if anyone knew about this Illinois law. I was unaware. I was just wonderin because i have a 40 series Flowmaster on my 2004 f150. By no means am i takin it off, but i was just curious...

Thanks,

Zane

No, he pulled us over for the exhaust, but he does have a body kit and the trooper said they pull over cars like that alot, but the main reason was for the exhaust.

What PolPilot is saying is that the reason the cop pulled you over to check if you were drinking or doing drugs. The excuse the cop used is that your exaust is to loud/illegal.

This is from the Illinois Vehicle Code:

(625 ILCS 5/12‑602) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑602)
Sec. 12‑602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this Section.

By the law, you can put on an aftermarket exhaust but it can't be louder than stock.

This sounds like an illegal unenforcable law since cops don't carry with them sound pressure meters. It's like saying it's illegal to drive over 55 mph but NEVER giving the cops a radar speed gun.

Every state has a noise ordinence law but as more of these kids runnin fart cans and are disturbing the peace cops are starting to enforce them but if you have a nice ride im sure you will get off with a warning like you did but if you got a POS with a noise box your bound for a fix it ticket. state of florida says any noise coming from a vehicle that can be heard from 50 feet away falls under this category whether it be exhaust/stereo or even your stock horn you can be cited

FALSE. Many officers are equipped with decibel meters in their vehicles now to determine how loud exhausts are at a certain RPM

There's always the "stealth factor" to consider, and Cavalier + body kit + fart can doesn't cut it.

I'd bet that trooper sees dozens of pickups with aftermarket exhaust systems roll past him every day and doesn't even think twice about them as long as they're obeying traffic laws.

If you do things to draw more attention to yourself, you're going to draw more attention and sometimes it's not what you'd like.

And yeah police profile people and cars. Understand that before you plant your butt in some sweet Cavalier.

Cool.

Good for OEM exhaust/muffler manufacturers, bad for high flow exhaust manufacturers.

In this particular case (Illinois), how do they determine if the level on the decibel meter is louder than stock exhaust or not at said RPM?
