Need schooling in Exhaust systems!

First question I have is "How many cats does my 06' Screw have?
Second question "What is the difference between a cat back system and true duels? I ask this because if the truck has more than one cat how does the cat back system work? Do I have to replace the oem cats with aftermarket stuff?
Last question is what am I looking at as far as cost go?

I hope this isn't too much ignorance for you all to handle! Thanks in advance!

1) your truck has 4 cats, 2 on each side. the front ones are smaller resonators for sound deletion. the rear ones are larger and more for emmisions and smog etc. (i believe)
2) cat-back means the exhaust system behind the cats. technically, true dual can be a cat-back system, they are just setup differently then a Y-pipe with single muffler, etc. you dont have to replace your cats for true duals, or for any cat-back system.
3) if you want to save money, do not buy the full cat-back systems off the internet, they are a rip. buy your muffler(s) and tip(s) and then take them to a shop and have them bend the pipe for you, should save you a couple hunder bucks. if you really want to save money, just replace your muffler with an aftermarket one and have it turned down.

hope this helps.

Thanks that's great info.

What would be the best option for performance?

If I just bought the muffler and tips would a shop use existing pipe or would I get the pipe from the shop?

I fully agree with this. Instead of buying the $500 Magnaflow catback for my truck, I just bought the SI/SO 3" muffler, and had an exhaust shop custom bend my 3" pipe. I also had it dumped after the muffler between the cab and the bed. Total cost including all parts, labor, and removal of the factory exhaust: $250. That's HALF the price of the Magnaflow catback. The only setback is that I have aluminized steel pipe rather than stainless steel (the whole reason why the Magnaflow kits cost so much), but it doesn't snow here in TX, so no salt on the road, so I'm not worried about rust.

Another question

Just so the original poster doesn't feel bad about asking these questions, I have a few also.

Do Magnaflow or Borla make mufflers meant for dual exhausts?

Second, I'd like to get nerf bars put on sometime in the future. Will this be a problem with duals or will they even be close to them?

Thanks in advance.

they both make mufflers for the dual exhaust. magnaflow makes many SI/DO mufflers. for borla, i reccomend looking at their "roush" muffler systems, people seem to like them a lot and they are duals. if your talking about true dual exhaust just use two SI/SO mufflers, both companies make them.

nerf bars shouldnt be a problem unless your exhaust exits to the side before the wheel. as long as you run your tips behind the rear axle or dump behind the muffler, you should be fine with nerf bars.

Thanks mSall,
Another question - I've seen the term "dump" several times in the forum. What exactly does this mean? Are you talking about where the exhaust system actually terminates?

Yes... your muffler/exhaust would be "dumped" under your bed. Instead of having it come out the rear end it would just have a 10" piece of pipe welded to it and sit underneith your bed.

I believe Magnaflow has a lifetime warranty.

Plus, you don't really "need" duals until you get up into a high RWHP range, maybe 325+ RWHP but I know they look good though.
