Thinking of a new sound

Hey everyone.

I have an 05' F150 STX Supercab, and i'm looking to improve the sound of the 4.6.

Will adding just a new muffler make a difference? I have a fairly low budget, so I don't think i'll be able to afford an entire system, unless someone here has a good idea.

I'd just replace the stock muffler with a dumped 14" Magnaflow. You won't have to worry about the cost running a pipe and tip and won't have to worry about keeping the stainless tip clean.

Thanks for the quick reply Park.

What exactly do you mean by "dumped"? And as for sizing... do you know what I would need?

For a new sound on the cheap, you can just get a new muffler put in. I like Magnaflow. When you're looking at them, the smaller the muffler the louder they are. You don't have to run pipe out the back, that will save you some money. Just get a turndown by the rear axle. Should be about $100 or less at a shop. Even cheaper if you do it yourself.

Yea, I'll defiantly be doing this then.

What are the size requirements for a 05' 4.6? I'm probably going to order it online for the best price and then install it myself.

Here is a pic of mine. It's a 12" (length) Dynomax Bullet, 2.5" I/O, it was around $30 - $35 from Jegs. It cost me $20 to have the old muffler cut off and the new one put on.

Here is the stock water heater, I mean muffler that came off.

I think I've decided on going with the Magnaflow. I've read a bunch of threads stating that the Flowmaster could possible cause a loss in low-end torque, and I really like the deep sound of the Magnaflow better.

So the stock pipes on a 05' STX are 2.5? So I would need to get a 2.5 in & out, center & center?

As for a turn down (which I think means that after the muffle, it just has a short pipe that points towards the ground at an angle, is there anything to worry about heat back there since its releasing it a lot sooner than having a pipe to the back would?

Also, what size length for the Maggie? 18'' good? Shorter? Longer? I am going for a really deep mean sound.

Where I live we get emissions tests every year and I went in with my 90 mustang that had mac dumps on it and they failed it.They said the pipes have to "exit the body".I added tail pipes and it passed then I asked what exit the body means. The tip of the pipe has to stick out past the truck/car be it side or rear. They also added a new law that the pipe has to pass the center or the rear wheels. So if you have emissions testing check about the turn down before you spend the cash.

I put a Flowmaster cat back kit on my 4.6 today and it sounds great nice low tone but loud when you step on it.Was $300 bux tho.

I put the dynomax bullet on my 02 4.6 with side exit like the lightning, love the sound, its real deep and aggressive when you stand on it, but when your just cruising, its barely noticeable,

Plus, they are cheaper then magnaflow, and should last just as long or longer.

Good choice with the Mag. The 18" would probably be a middle ground. Not too loud, but you'll know it's thier. Stick with 2.5" pipe. If you get turndowns, dump it after the cab near the rear axle.

I have a Magnaflow 14" on mine and I wish it was louder. I had a Flowmaster on it but it rusted out so I tried the Magnaflow, the flowmaster might of been a little louder but the Magnaflow has a deeper tone to it. If you go with the Magnaflow then get the smallest one you can.
