K&N airfilter system

hey there,, i just purchased a 07 F-150 5.4 V-8 and was wondering if anyone has installed the K&N airfilter system.. not just the filter itself, but to take off the stock snorkles and replace it with the K&N and if you saw any notice in gas mileage and/or power???
I had one on my 99 F350 Crew, but that thing was like a tank to drive so i needed something smaller.. I hauled a camper and a 20ft boat with the F350, but won't haul much with this truck and wondered if it would be worth it..
ALSO---- my freind has a 05 F-150 with 30K on it and needs to replace the plugs.. any brand better than another that you guys have found?

Thanks for any info you can give,,, i may be a girl but i like my Ford trucks and hate to be ripped off at auto stores for the simple fact that i am a girl!!

thanks all....

Hello Annette,

Welcome and I think it's great that you have such an interest and knowledge of what's under the hood of a vehicle! (my wife knows there is an engine under the hood and how to check the oil, but that's as far as she ever wants to go with it!)

To be honest and totally IMO, you won't see any 'night and day' type of changes by adding a full blown 'air intake system' or even just the K&N drop in... That being said, I have a drop in K&N and have had it for over 6 years and 110,000 + miles and love the thing.... The reason?? Because I don't have to change air filters every 15,000 miles or whatever.....

I've only cleaned it 3 times since new and it works very well and I don't have any dust residue on the intake side like 'everyone' claims... I've never had a MAF problem and my engine has not 'imploded' because of it either..

When I do clean my K&N, I run the paper filter for a couple of days while I'm 'servicing' the K&N (you don't just wash it, oil it and put it back in within an hour!)

What I notice is a definite change in the way the truck handles low rpm hills and such... With the K&N in (even up until I decide to actually clean it) my truck can take the same hill I've been taking for 9 years and remain in locked 3rd gear going about 35-40 mph. When I put in the very clean and less then 1000 mile paper filter and go up the same hill, my truck will need to downshift into SECOND gear to maintain 35-40 mph......

So, with the K&N, I can maintain speed, maintain my throttle position as to not trigger a downshift and hold 35-40mph... With the paper filter in, I have to press the throttle down deeper, which triggers the downshift and then it will maintain 35-40mph or faster, then shift back into third, bog down again and then downshift a second time, going up the same hill!

This is only my experience with it.... I can't claim any MPG increase, as I've not had the paper one in long enough to gauge it, but I always put the K&N back in and only check on it during my 6000 mile oil changes.....

Good luck!

Mitch

Cool

I have an 06 f150 5.4L and i installed a K&N 57-series cold air intake after i got dual-exit flowmasters and i tell you the biggest difference i have noticed with the K&N isn't really the gas mileage (probably b/c of my lead foot) but #1-the sound -combined with the flows it gives my truck a mean snarl when you get into it and #2-an extra kick in the pants at higher RPMs-you can really tell a difference in torque when towing and on the highway. Bottom line, IMO, is that if you want better gas mileage, go slow, but if you want more power and a meaner sounding truck, go with the K&N Cold Air Intake

I agree with musclecarman13, my F250 has a K&N intake FIPK kit & si/do Flowmaster 40 exhaust and it sounds very nice. Great combo

The sound your truck makes will be the biggest difference. It will definitely sound throatier with the K&N. I have the Aircharger kit along with SISO Magnaflow catback. It sounds awesome when you slam your foot down.

my experience with my FIPK is pretty much the same as these other guys.
As for your spark plug question, the best answer is that you get what you pay for. If you buy the bargain brand you will not get as clean of an arc, or as pure of a burn. This all leads up to power loss and inefficiency on the part of the engine. Tell your friend to spend the extra $15.00 on a full set, and I think your he/she will be much happier. Just make sure that he/she gaps them right.
