Help! Intake Questions

Hey, I'm new here and just had a couple questions

I have a 2007 F150 FX2 Sport SuperCab with the 5.4L Triton, and the only upgrades are the tires and rims so far.

I was looking over at Troyer Performance and had some questions, so here they are:

1. I've decided on an AF1 CAI system, but I've heard that the 3.5" version for the 5.4L V8 needs a custom tune but the 3" version doesn't. I don't want to custom tune right now so should I just order the AF1 CAI 3" system for the 4.6L and it should fit on my truck?

2. I've also heard that if you do get the custom tuning, it takes awhile for it to arrive at your place, anyone have experience as to how long it takes from the time you order it to the time it arrives at your house?

I'm also ordering exhaust and have already decided on the Magnaflow 16616 model, SI/DO with side exit before the tire.

Thanks in advance for any help

im not sure about the CAI, but from what i have read about troyer it takes quite a while to get the tunes. somewhere around a month or so. seeing as how i have never dealt with troyer i cannot say for sure. im sure someone who has purchased the tunes will chime in here.

There is a 3" AF1 for the 5.4, which is what you want. I believe it is a completely different intake for the 4.6. It does not require tuning. The 3 1/2" AF1 does require a custom tune. Right now it looks like a 2 month wait to get your tunes from Troyer.

If you want to get the Intake, Tunes and Exhaust, you can get a package deal from TP that sounds like a pretty good deal. You should check out there website for more info...

2 months is a long time though...

Hi. You need to call them; the web site shows a very small subset of what they actually carry... a work in progress.

I'm not sure if the 3" is actually listed for the 5.4, but they definitely have it. Like MGDFan says. If you give them a call, they will set you up.

Alright, sounds good to me. I'll give them a call tomorrow then and see what I can figure out. Thanks for the help, I would have been pretty mad at myself if I had gotten the 4.6 3" and it didn't fit when it got here.

Here is my stupied question for the day. Why does the 3.5 need a tune and the 3 does not. Does that little of a size difference play that big of part?

Hi.

Briefly (I say that a lot, but it seldom turns out that way lol)....

The 3"' tube design allows the use of the PCM's hard-coded stock MAF transfer function, whereas the 3.5", even though just as bit larger, would skew that TF enough to run the motor dangerously lean in open loop ( High load / WOT).

What a custom tune does for this is to replace the stock TF with one that was written to work with the larger intake tube - in effect 'remapping' the MAF to the flow characteristics of the tube, at every throttle position/ load.
This is a lot of R&D work one TP's dyno; he has in fact created TF's for several aftermarket intakes that would otherwise have issues.

The 3V's can been boogered by even seemingly minor intake tract changes. There have even been cases where just an AirRaid MIT would require correction, in some trucks,- it's not consistent.

You want the complete unabridged scoop on this - call them up. Bring a chair

Help any?

Cheers
Bubba

Thanks Bubba So if I get the 3'', I should be good to go and never have to worry about a tune? Could I still get a tune in the future with the 3''?

Hi.

Yes - good to go. And yes on the future tunes.

Also - you can upgrade the tube if you wanted to, if you went with a tune later. Not sure on the price for that, perhaps ask them anyway?

cheers
