with or without tips?

I was going to buy either a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler and then have a local exhaust shop custom make the pipes for my exhaust.
(friend swears by their work and claims its much cheaper than buying the whole kit) My plan is to probably run dual out the rear. I wasnt going to put tips on the system. Will this be a mistake? Are the tips mostly cosmetic or do they dramatically add to the performance sound?

The size of the tips have an effect on the sound. Plus, just look better in my opinion.

Tips

I ran my pipes over the axle and dumped them right in front of the rear bumper,no tips. The mechanic tucked the pipes nice and tight against the frame, and ran the pipes so when he dumped them you can't see them unless you get under the truck.I like the sound I get w/o the tips, and the Bassani X pipe I just installed my truck sounds like a Mustang @ idle.Hope this helped.

IMO I like the look of tips, it just looks like you were too cheap to buy the rest of the exhaust when it's not visible. Run em out the back it your 2WD, corners if you're 4WD, that's just my opinion though.

Thanks for your replies. Tips it is!

Any opinions towards magnaflow or flowmaster? Im hoping to achieve a mustang type growl, but if I am going to spend the money, the louder the better IMO. What size tips are you guys running and where did you order them from?

Magnaflow! I have 18" long, 3.5" diameter ss tips and I am happy with the look and sound. I have considered this tip setup in the past, but I could not make myself do it. I was considering having the dual pipes out the back, but with turn-down tips hidden just behind the bumper so they are out of sight. I thought this might be a clean looking setup, but I just like the look of the tips under the bumper!

Magnaflow tips will last longer, I like both the rolled tips & slash cut style tips, slashcut mainly for straight out the back.
