Can't get midpipe off!
Can't get midpipe off!
So i'm in the process of installing a magnaflow 15609, muffler with mid/tail pipe.. I've been at it for a while, using solvents that are supposed to break rust seals, etc... and I can't get the midpipe off of the truck where it connects to the cat extension (already cut the muffler and tailpipe out).. Any tips on this?? Its a 2000 F150, with a decent amount of rust. Love these 30 minute installs, if it weren't for the one stubborn part that takes hours.
thanks,
Todd

My 07 had a dowel holding the pipes together. I had to spin it to the release point then it came right off. If it wont spin you might need to put some heat on it with a torch, that will work for sure.

well, it seems like I have the midpipe free of the corrosion, but I still can't seperate it. It seems to connect diffentley then your 07.. there is no dowel, but a small nub on the cat extension, and then a U is cut into the midpipe.. the nub slips in the U.. so I can spin the midpipe a little, but only as much as there is tolerance between the U and the nub.. It seems like the clamp kind of crimped the pipes, so while they are free, i just can't pull them apart. I've tried hammering the pipes apart using the second clamp on the midpipe for some leverge, but nothing.
That nub is the dowel! Once you get it spun just right it should shimmy right off. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Make sure every thing is loose. I remember thinking the same thing you are...then once i got it spun just right shazam it cam right off.
Well, I gave up and took it to the local service station.. They torched it until it was red hot, while a second guy yanked it off. It definatly wasn't a dowel, just a little nub.. THe reason it was so hard to get off was the previous clamp had crimped them together, as I had suspected. $25 was worth it, wish I had done it in the beginning before I spent over 2 hours under the truck yelling and grunting. Bolting the new system on took all of 15 minutes which was sweet.. Everything fit perfectly, whch made things super easy. Thanks again for your help though.
