Sorry, yet another intake question
Sorry, yet another intake question
First, I have read every post in this forum about intakes from start to finish going back like 14 pages and still have not been able to resolve which one (if any) I want to buy.
I seem to be after something a little different than most. My reason for wanting an intake is first and foremost for a boost in gas mileage. A secondary benefit would be the reduced maintenance cost over time. Last, but certainly not least, I do not want a perceptible increase in noise at idle or under normal driving situations. If it roars when I get on it, that's OK by me.
I couldn't care less about any performance gain, although I realize that this may be more or less directly tied to (relatively speaking) any mileage gain. I don't wail on it except once in a great while to "keep it limber" - rather, I go out of my way to get the best possible gas mileage. Do intakes make much of a difference under 'normal' driving conditions? FWIW, I am in Indiana, hot, muggy summers, cold winters. We vacation in the cold Canadian rockies, and the desert southwest, so all conditions.
Is there an intake out there that meets this criteria? From all the posts I have read thus far, I am not convinced that there is. Feel free to set me straight!

Hi.
Couple things:
The forum you should be searching, oddly enough, is the Chips forum - that's where the expertise is.
Any intake worthy of a performance claim is going to make more noise under load - some more than others, depending upon configuration/design.
Even fully enclosed intakes have been reported to make objectionable noise.
So, if noise is an issue, stay with stock.
Intakes generally don't increase mileage enough to warrant their expense, if mileage increase is your goal.
Custom tuners, however, can. This is the best bang-for-buck mod you can do, and should be chosen over an intake as a first step.
Consider that some intakes can cost almost as much as a custom tuner, or a significant portion thereof. At least, the effective ones do.
Consider also that, with a custom tuner, you can actually specify a mileage tune ,a perf tune and a tow tune, or any combination you can think of.
A tuner also brings many other benefits an intake just can't touch; driveability improvements, better shifting, better BSFC ( brake specific fuel consumption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brake_s...el_consumption) - where the mileage can come from - , etc, etc.
Again - all this info is already there in abundance in the Chips forum.
Keep your stock intake, & get a custom-tuned Xcal2. IMHO
