Real life improvements from intake/cat back
Real life improvements from intake/cat back
I've got an '01 F150 King Ranch Supercrew with the 5.4L and the factory tow package. I'm at 62,000 miles on it and living here in the midwest rust belt, its time to replace the original muffler due to corrosion from the winter road salts. I'm not looking to try and make a hot rod out of the truck, but if I can get a little more power and torque when I'm pulling our 5,800lb. (loaded weight) hybrid travel trailer and possible gain a little improved mileage I'm all for it. A Magnaflow catback exhaust system seems like a no brainer since I'm due to replace the muffler anyway. I see what gains they post on their website. What I'm not sure about is whether adding a cold air intake like a K&N will make enough difference to justify the cost. I've also thought about getting a K&N filter for the factory intake setup as another option. Does a cold air intake really make a noticable improvement, and if so, how hard is it to get the right amount of oil on the filter to stop the dirt without fouling the sensors downstream of it? Thanks for the help.
05Supercrew - thanks for the reply. That would help a lot to use their kit. I would still like to hear from someone who uses either just the filter or a whole cold air intake on whether there is a noticable improvement to the everyday driving I will be doing. I all for the truck looking cool and stuff, but there are too many pulls on the paycheck to buy something that no matter how cool it looks doesn't give any real measurable benefits.
I added the k&n fipk. There is more intake noise when the throttle is wide open. I did not notice much performance gains with just the k&n. I added a flowmaster 50 series muffler. The two performance components seem to work very well together. Mileage has increased almost 2 mpg. Feels stronger as well.
