MAF Transfer Function? What is it?

We keep on hearing the guru's here talk about "MAF Transfer Function" but what does it mean?

Is it mapping "Intake x's MAF signal output" vs "actual flow as measure by a calibrated flow meter"?

or...?

Thanks!

Hi.

Not a guru, but I read a lot LOL!

Overly Simple answer:

It's a table of values stored in the PCM...

0V = xxxx counts
-to-
5v = zzzz counts

It relates the voltage being output from the MAF to 'counts', which equals the actual mass of air flowing past it (hence the name). important thing to note here is, it's specific ( or calibrated) for the actual MAF and the design of the intake tract as a whole. So - change something ( like the location of the sensor, the pipe, etc) and the values are no longer accurate - usually with negative consequences.

Ideally, each intake should be measured and have the transfer function modifed accordingly. Custom tuning does that, and as mentioned elsewhere, Mike Troyer has done this work.

Try searchin' the Chips forum - lots of detail on this from Mike over the years.

OR - pick up dat phone !

Cheers
Bubba
