Muffler cut-out.

I'm looking to replace my factory muffler with a Magnaflow 14" or 18" 2.5 diameter. A couple of questions? How big of a difference is it between the 14 vs 18. I would like it louder then my stock but not to loud. Is this the right size 2.5 diameter for my year 1998. Also i read some people weld the new one in or clamp it in. What is clamping it in? Has anyone changed the muffler on there own. Any links with info on this possibly doing it yourself project . What parts will i need other then the muffler. I found a link on hear Peddler something. There prices seem good. Thanks

Performancepeddler.com is what you are talking about. It is where I purchased my 18" Magnaflow (12256). I had a local shop put the muffler on because I wanted it welded in. You can do it yourself and clamp it in with normal U clamps from you local auto parts store. If you are looking to just replace the muffler, you should only need to purchase about an 18" length of pipe to make up the difference between the stock Vs. new muffler (that stock muffler is HUGE). I have a picture in my gallery of the installed muffler and the added pipe.

Anyway, my Magnaflow sounds good on initial start-up (nice rumble), but then quiets down to barely louder than stock after warming up. I wanted to make sure you understood that sentence, because when I bought it, I thought it would rumble continuously. It sounds good upon acceleration and has a nice, throaty sound when you punch it. It has very little sound (drone) at highway speeds. A 14" muffler should be a little louder from what I've read, but still not too loud.

All in all, the muffler that I put on my truck was exactly what I wanted, as I also use my truck to get to my hunting areas, and I didn't want too much sound!

Edit--Sorry, I didn't see that yours is a '98, so I can't say exactly what you would need in the way of extra pipe, as I'm going off of the '04-'05 type of truck like mine, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be too different.

+1 on the last post. It sounds killer when you first start it, or romp on it, but at idle, there is no sound. Gonna get me a dynomax race bullet to swap. If you want I might have an 18" magnaflow for sale in a couple weeks.
