Go Dumped???

I've got a 2000 F150 4x4 with a 5.4. My exhaust is a true dual set-up with no mufflers, exiting through 4" chrome tips. I really like the sound, but the tips always seem to be dirty and now have some really deep rust on them.

I just wanted to hear from the guys that have their exhuast dumped. It seems like to me all that is needed is a couple of turndowns? How does it affect the sound? It just seems to me it would be alot simpler than buying and welding on two new tips. Do you guys think it's worth just dumping it before the axle?

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions.

i dont have a true dual exhaust. i just have a si/do magnaflow. i dumped both tips from the muffler with turndowns. i am satisfied with the sound i have considering my setup. i think it should sound fine though. you get a little bit of an echo with the turndowns

I like the tips out the back. You can get some SS tips and not have to worry about them rusting.

I had duals out the back of my 05' Screw until about 2 weeks ago. I just wanted to go for a cleaner look but still have the sound. I got the exhaust shop to cut off the pipes and do a turndown.

The sound in the cab is a little louder but I like it better when you get down on the throttle. And I like the cleaner look, you can't see the exhaust but you can hear it.

I'm glad I did it.

True, I could go and pick up a set of stainless tips. But they always seem to get dirty from offroading and everything else, and I feel like dumping it will give the truck a cleaner look. I just don't want to sacrifice any sound when doing this...

some may call me crazy, but...

I guess most people like having pipes, but I truly think that dumped exhaust sounds better. it's not so obnoxious, yet tends to be plenty loud with a great rumble, especially when you get on it. it's odd how the cheaper option is better to my ears. pipes are so typical these days...it's just not unique anymore.

Yea that's what I figured. I want something different than every other pickup I see going down the street. I just love the sound of my true dual set-up with no mufflers. I don't want to sacrifice any tone. Does the note get any louder or more crackly when the exhaust is dumped?

I would say...less precise. simply because with pipes, not only are the low tones being accented, but so are the higher pitched ones (giving you that pippey sound), which our ears can sense change better to. In addition to that, your sound is hitting the ground and speading out, and also reverberating around under your bed, giving it the echo mentioned above. I think with a 5.4 running no mufflers and turn downs theres no way you could be unsatisfied.

You would be surprised at the tone with no mufflers. It isn't as loud as its made out to be. Really nice idle, with little drone. Any you can really hear it at WOT. I think I'm going to go with dumped real soon. Since I'm hearing that the sound could only get better with the turndowns before the axle.
