Question Attn: Maggie owners, Noob w/ questions

To all you Magnaflow owners out there, I am very seriously considering Maggies for my truck, and have a few questions.

1) Does Magnaflow offer catback duals for a 2006 SuperCrew (shortbed) that have the exhaust behind the tire, but with one on each side and not with both behind the rear passenger side tire? I haven't seen this setup for Magnaflow.

2) I understand Maggies are bolt on. Did most of you just bolt them on, or did you have them welded? What are the pros and cons?

3) What are the pros and cons of replacing the cats? Should I only worry about replacing the mufflers?

4) What are the pros and cons of just buying Magnaflow mufflers and/or cats, and having a custom shop bend some pipes for you? If I have Magnaflow cats/mufflers, will the sound be any different if a custom shop does the pipes?

5) Where is the least expensive place to order the mufflers/cats/exhaust system?

6) Where's that Magnaflow rep................?

Thanks in advance......

I love my Magnaflows! I have a complete stainless steel Magnaflow exhaust setup on my '06 FX4 with the 5.5 bed.

You can buy the bolt on kit if you want, I went to a custom exhaust shop here in my area and I had them custom bend and weld the entire thing. I have a absolute perfect fit with really nice welds. That is what I'd recommend over a bolt on kit. No chance of any rattling or loose bolts or maybe even theft for that matter (small chance, but you never know?) For me, the price wasn't that bad considering I went with all stainless.

The sound is great, the performance is really nice. No drone at all which is a plus if you've got the family to haul around. I was on the fence for so long when I bought my truck as to go with Flowmaster or Magnaflow. I'm happy I went with the Maggies! The shop that I went to also said that Maggies outsold Flowmaster, mainly because the Flowmaster rust through so fast.

Anyway, check out my gallery for some pics.

1.) Magnaflow part number 16614, if you're looking for the full bolt on kit.

2.) My Magnaflow exhaust is custom, and is welded. I've read countless threads where people have been happy with the bolt-on kit. I've also read about fit problems in some cases.

3.) You could go with a highflow cat setup now, but I'd do that when you do the headers. I would only do 'cat back' right now.

4.) There aren't any cons to having a competent professional build you a system using a Magnaflow muffler as the base. I did it on my 2004 SuperCrew, and I wouldn't trade it or change it for anything else out there. I bought an 18" single in/dual out polished, stainless steel Magnaflow muffler, had my guy do custom, mandrel bends on 2 1/2" stainless steel tubing, brought the tubes out right before the rear passenger wheel, and topped it all off with 3 1/2" Magnaflow slash cut stainless steel tips. Full custom catback stainless system, $379 out the door, and it's exactly what I wanted, right down to the angle of the tips. I think the most important thing for me was finding a good custom shop that had a mandrel bender, and being able to see some of their past exhaust work on their web page.

5.) If you go with the custom option, find your shop first, then see what kind of deal they can do on parts and labor. Otherwise, I'd say scope ebay or any of the 3-4 online retailers everyone uses here that accepts coupon codes.

6.) The last post I saw by the Magnaflow rep had something like, "suspended pending answer" under his name, or something along those lines. I hope I'm remembering correctly...

Good luck,

Justin

Question

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 16614 is same side exhaust behind the tire, right? I'd prefer one on each side behind the tire. I haven't seen that from Magnaflow, unless I am mistaken.

I don't have any plans to do headers, so either I get the cats along with the mufflers, or I just stay with the factory cats.

It is starting to sound more and more like I should buy Magnaflow mufflers (and maybe high-flow cats) and have a custom shop install them and then bend me some pipes like I want, weld them, and I'll get some nice chrome tips for them to install as well.

But I still have a question. OK, so exhaust comes out the header and through a 2.5" pipe to the catalytic converters, one on each side. From there, should it go through a y-pipe to a si/do muffler, or through an x-pipe to a di/do muffler? Obviously, the 16614 is a si/do setup. How do Inknow which I want?

1) No to Maggie. MBRP does. You won't be sorry with the quality and fit. Their kit IS all polished stainless with stainless tips at a 45 degree behind the tires. Believe me, go with them and you won't be sorry. Last I checked, it was about $500, but next to a Magnaflaw, it looks like 24k gold next to plastic.

2) Bolt on, and then weld the stainless tips for security

3) I personally think replacing the cats is a waste of money, unless you are doing other mods, and then maybe some high flows will help. maybe somebody else can answer with more experience.

4) Buying a kit will may have all stainless parts. Most shops I called for a custom install did not have stainless pipes as they could not bend it. Check your local shops. Sound should not be different.

5)Do a search on here for places to buy - many have asked before. I ordered from Troyer when I ordered my tunes, and frankly, the deal they made wasn't much more than Hotexhaust or Performancepeddler with their coupons. I rather support the sponsors on this site FWIW.

6) The Maggie rep is gone. They refused to sponsor this site. Bye bye.

16614 Is a Dual Split out the rear
16616 is a Dual Same Side before the rear tire.

1. Don't know.

2. Mine's welded. I know it won't fall off, clamps may loosen over time.

3. Don't worry about the cats.

4. I had mine done at a local shop for $240. Mandrel bent pipe and SIDO muffler. I ordered 2 SS tips for $60. $300 total. No sound diff.

5. You might find some deals on e-gay.

Is it possible just to replace my muffler with a magnaflow muffler and leave in the stock pipes. I want to keep the look of stock but, I want a new muffler. Do they have a bolt on application for that scenario?

Question

All right, so I have been to see my local Magnaflow dealer. We have discussed the possibility of him installing a Magnaflow muffler and bending some custom pipes and some stainless steel rolled tips. I am going to have one behind the driver side rear tire and one behind the passenger side rear tire.

I am having the pipes custom bent because 1) I didn't want both pipes on the same side, which was the Magnaflow kit setup, and 2) I don't want the expense of stainless steel pipes. For me, a nice heavy guage anodized aluminum will be just fine, especially given the price.

I have decided against high flow cats, and also against removing two of the factory cats.

My one remaining concern is this: the dealer is recommending a si/do muffler (12278) which I am told is 3" input and 2 1/4" dual output. I thought for certain he was going to suggest 2 1/2" output.

Questions: Which should I insist upon, and why? What is the difference? Will the difference be noticeable?
