CAI Closed or Open system

Just picked up an 05 SCab and I was thinking of getting a CAI. When I was at the car wash the other day I popped the hood to see how much water was up there. It seemed like a decent amount, enough to make me second guess an open air system.

Any of you guys and gals had problems sucking in "things" other than air into your intakes?

I live in Northern MI so we've got snow, rain, mud, and maybe a deer that could get under the hood.

Thanks,
chad

I've had no problems with my AIRAID in the year I've had it. Cleaned it twice and was amazed at how GOOD it actually filters the air.

Yeah, air is one thing, but how would it do with a deer? I went with the Volant in my Expedition simply because I do a lot of off roading on sandy and muddy roads. From all I've read and seen, it's personal preference. Some will insist that one is better than the other, but since I have a closed system it must be best!

I agree on the closed system, when I had an open filter, the only time I went through the autocarwash, it sucked all kinds of water in and killed the engine... but luckly it was only enough to get the maf wet so it was an easy fix... also, i noticed a lot better performance with my volant in slow driving because its not sucking the hot engine air.

Ok, maybe not as good with a deer, but I didn't buy it for that now did I
CAIs really are nothing more than personal preferance and this was mine at the time I got. Now I'm starting to lean more toward an AF1 with troyer tunes.

Technically speaking, is there anything different between the AF1 and the AirRaid that you have? Is it the filter that's different? or how it's designed? I've often wondered about this. When I see the open air filters they all look the same to me.

The AF1 has larger tubing when compared to other open design. In my case it would be 3.5" instead of 2.75". Basically more air + more fuel = more power.
But I'd get it for the torque on the low end for towing.

I drive a lot of sandy dirt roads, and after a good rain and running around between the fields on the farm, I pop my hood and see all the mud, sand, and other crap that has been splashed up everywhere. I just ordered my volant on sunday . I chose it since it was a closed system, and from what I've read it seems to have a good reputation. Intake gets here friday and I can't wait!

p.s. autoanything.com has the volant with airbox for 261 bucks, with free shipping, and a 1 year lowest price gurantee

You're gonna be wiping the dirt out of your intake tract, if you get an oiled filter. They catch about as much dust as a window screen.

I should be getting my Volant today from Auto anything. Mine was 251. Anyways, my tube is 4 inches. Is that too big?

Just put a pre-filter on it and be done with it.
Water can't penetrate it, plus it helps keep your filter clean.
