Removing Muffler

I have an 05 SCrew 5.4 and was wondering if anyone has experience with putting a piece of straight pipe in replacement of the stock muffler. I wanna do it myself and was wondering if I can just take off the clamps and remove the muffler or if I need to actually cut the muffler off and replace it with a straight pipe. Also, do you know if I can just clamp a new pipe on it or does it need to be welded on. Thanks for your help.

You can do it a few different ways. You can cut out the muffler, weld in a pipe and leave the rest out the back so it looks stock. You can go with straight pipes and duals exiting in front of the rear tire, duals out the back, etc. You can just cut the muffler out and dump the exhaust under the truck. I prefer to weld all my joints versus clamping them, that way I know it won't rattle/fall/come loose.

If you want to do it yourself just go down to an auto parts store and get a pipe that will fit the gap where your muffler would fit between the 2 pipes and get 2 exhaust clamps..hacksaw the muffler off, put the pipe in and clamp it on and your good to go....save the muffler and if you need to you can throw it back on with the clamps you got. Pretty Easy.

I'm running a straight pipe. All I did was cut the muffler off and replaced it with a flex pipe and a 2 foot piece of pipe, a hanger and clamped it, so it looks like the factory setup. I bought everything from Autozone.

I just had my muffler took off and had a piece of pipe welded in on my truck today. It don't sound all that loud and it only cost me $35 and I put a cheap tip that I payed $9 for at PepBoys to use to I get a better tip. Becuase all the shop has was long tips and some crazy tips that wouldn't look right on my truck.

I have all my cats still on and it's not all that loud. Well, I use to have 3" straight pipes and no cats on my other trucks. There's no comparison.

i put a piece of straight pipe in instead of my muffler and put a stainless tip exiting where the stock piece did and set it up flush... i had a shop do it and it only cost me 44 bucks.... i still have my cats and i dont think its that loud at all... my friend has got an 03 regular cab with dual in dual out flowmaster 50 series and our trucks are about the same loudness if that gives you any better idea?

I feel like there is no way to get sound out of these motors ! I have the 5.4 I just chopped the muffler off myself put a 2 ft. pipe on and dumped it underneath the bed before the axle , sounds mean when your driving slow or tap the gas but in terms of loudness it's like having a loud cat-back , the 4.6 is also a more agressive sounding engine , I know a kid who had straights without the cats and it was meeeean.. I've yet to hear a 5.4 with no cats tho

I am looking into doing this also. I learned some pretty helpful advice. My F250 has the American Thunder 50 series SI/DO setup, its loud but not deep enough, I plan for true duals with 40 series Delta Flows in my F150s future but for now I would like a little more sound. A loud deep tone is what i'm after but hey, anything is better than stock right?

dont think you can cut through you factory exaust pipe with a hack saw. Unless you have so much rust its paper thin (like darrens) then it would be atleast an hour to make one cut with a hand saw. Do yourself a favor, just get it cut and welded on at a muffler shop. Unless you have a sawzall and a welder, i wouldnt recommend doing it yourself, simply b.c that is the easy, and correct way to do it.

BTW when i had my muffler installed. He cut and removed stock muffler back, welded in a pipe, and new bullet muffler, and only charged me 20 bucks. Money well spent to keep me from having to lay under my truck sawing away.
