need help with exhausts
hey.. i have a 1996 rear wheel drive v6 and im trying to get the best outta it while it lasts.. my truck is like perfect condition and i love it, trying to find out what best type of muffler/exhaust system would be to make it sound like a beast.. do I get a full exhaust system or just a muffler and how do you install like do you just bolt it on.. (sorry im pretty clueless right now) thanks for the help in advance
There was no V-6 in 1996. There was an I-6, and the V-6 was started in 1997. If you want a beastly sound, then get a Flowmaster 40 series muffler. Go to a muffler shop, and tell them you want a cat back exhaust with a Flowmaster 40 series SIDO muffler.
Flowmaster 40 you need a high performance engine. I have heard it on a chevelle and it is bad but I have also heard it on a dodge 1500 like a 97 and it sounds like crap. So with you haveing a I6 I'd get either a cherry bomb or a glass pack. I have true duals with 2 glass packs. I have a buddy that has one pipe from the manifold then it runs to a glass pack then into a y pipe. It sounds pretty good and its loud! He also has like 4 inch tips. But his is a chevy 1500 4x4. Glass pack is what I'd put on if you want duals.
Or that...lol
I was in my dads stroker yesterday at a stop sign and some Dakota passed me like a 90-95 model and man it was the loudest truck I have ever heard. It sounded like crap but it was like ear drum busting loud. And that was him slowed down and taking a turn! That wasn't him getting on it. I don't know what in the world he had. He had to have had straights or nothing at all. But I think I recall seeing some tips.

what is a glass pack? (sorry dont know all the terms)... I want it to be street legal and not get me pulled over.. like cherry bomb what is that how much where do I get etc.. and glass packs whats that.. same (price where how) ty
Trumber, I'm guessing you're talking about the FLOWMaster 40 series? Magnaflow is a different type of muffler, both have different sounds. Try to hear some and see what you like, but I love my Flowmaster 40.
Buzz, a glasspack is basically an oversized straight through flow tube and the walls are packed with fiberglass to kill some of the sound. They are cheap, and don't sound all that good on newer trucks. Also, they blow out after a few years. There's a guy around here who has a glass pack on his I-6 F-150, and it sounds like crap. Get a Flowmaster and be done with it.

Airman what year is your truck? What engine does it have? You have a 40 series and it sounds good? I might be buying me a new truck and I could be getting a 2001 f-150 5.4. It has duals but they aren't very loud so I am wanting a nice deep sounding exhaust and I am hoping it isn't true duals so I can just cut whatever he has out and put the 40 series or another loud BUT good sounding exhaust.
1999 4.6..the 5.4 is a little quieter than the 4.6. Flame me all you want Magnaflow boys, but the 40 series would be the best sounding exhaust for that truck. Even if it is a true dual set up (which I highly doubt), then get two SI/SO 40 series mufflers... If you want an opinion on how my exhaust sounds, ask PSS-Mag.
Well my truck is a true dual exhaust. So is the 40series fairly loud? I mean I want this truck to be heard when I am driving it. I don't want it so loud it sounds like crap. I want a deep roar. My buddy has a 94 Chevy 1500 5.7(I think) with a glass pack siso then runs into a y pipe as soon as it comes out then straight out the back(Only way to go in my opinion) with 4 inch tips on it. It sounds very good and it loud but doesn't have the pop pop pop pop most trucks that are loud have. He also told me the 40 series you need a high performance engine to make it sound good.
