Flowmaster or Magnaflow for a 5.4 2004 FX4

The last few days I have been reading all the old posts about exhausts and I am really torn between which exhaust to go with. I want to either get the flowmaster 40 si/do or the magnaflow si/do. I am looking for an exhaust thats going to be loud and at the same time one thats not going to rust out in a yr. Please give me some suggestions. Also, does adding a 4in tip instead of a 3 make a big difference in the sound. Thanks.

Join the club. I too am confused about what exhaust to get for my truck. I wanted to do true duals but I have read that the gains are not really worth it when compared to just swaping out the muffler. I would think that a larger tip would give you slightly louder sound and possibly a slightly different ehaust tone as well. I'm not 100% on that though.

If a nice sound is your goal then Flowmaster is the winner hands down. Some will say you lose torque with a Flow but I did not notice any loss with my truck. They will tell you to get a Magnaflow and that you will gain horsepower and torque......I think +10hp/10torque however you will not have the loud sound you want. The Magna is more expensive also so you just gotta pick what you want.

ok,look at it this way.what's the rest of your exhaust made of? aluminized steel.so why pay extra JUST to get a stainless muffler? i've had no problem with flow's rustin.my first one barely had any rust on the outside after like 2 years and i go through alot of mud.i just took it off cause i wanted true duals.i've noticed very little,if any, loss in low end.that's my $.02

In GA, SC, and NC, I have never had a flowmaster rust out. Some of them were installed for 6 years or more.

If it is of any help, I have had Magna, FlowM and Borla on an 04 4.6L and the Flows were by far the nicest. I put 3 inch from the catback and went duals just outside the rear wheels. I received a tonne of compliments on the Flows, none on the others... I had 50's and 40's... go with 40's

The magnaflow tends to be a more performace sound and the flowmaster has a more off road truck sound. My maggy's sound awesome plus i'm about to put in high flow cats, that will help me get that head turining sound. You can listen to the magnaflows on your truck on their website.

im looking into an exaust system myself, never had an afterket one before so i was going around in circles until i found out BANKS made an exaust for gas rigs. everyone knows banks is the diesel king in cusotm motors, exausts, intakes etc. and figure his exaust for gas engines wouldnt be no different.

I have owned many F-150's in my life and have used both magnaflow and flowmaster exhaust systems. To tell you the truth, I didnt notice a mileage gain difference between the two. Mainly because I floor it everywhere I go. The flowmaster 40 series exhaust is one of the loudest ones they make and started to give me a headache after awhile. I just put another magnaflow on my 06 F-150 with a 6" lift and I think it sounds mean as hell! Whats nice about the magnaflow is it sounds mean at start up and idle but tends to be quieter at higher speads. You have to spend alot more money with the flowmaster to get a higher 60 or 70 series exhaust to not be as loud. It all depends on what your looking for!

I got a solution! How about you go neither and run no muffler. That way you wont have to deal with choosing a muffler

It's funny to read that people think the Magnaflow is quiet. At certain rpm's I think my exhaust is ear dronning. It gets annoying as ****. If you accelerate more quickly then it goes away and sounds great but for my daily driving habits the point I always want it to be at is the loudest and most annoying.

I went with the 3" Catback Magnaflow on our truck. It has been a graet choose. But to each his own. If you want sound do the flow, if you want a deep rumble do the Magna

I went with the Magnaflow with 3.5" inch tips. For pure volume, Flow Master is going to be louder. However, the Flow Master is also, in my opinion, considerably more annoying. You will experience droaning from the Flow Master at speed. The Magnaflow is much quieter at speed and plenty loud enough at lower speeds. Again though, as far as volume goes, the Flow Master is the hands-down winner.
