SISO muffler help.

I recently purchased a 2001 F150 SCrew with a stock 5.4. Basically, I'm looking for a little bit deeper sounding exhaust that would also help a little with power and mileage. Is there any realistic option for just installing an quality aftermarket muffler to the stock setup that will give any improvements? I don't want something too loud, but I would like a little more growl. And any extra zip and added mileage would be icing on the cake.

Thanks.

If you read through these forums you'll see that this ? has been asked and answered many times, so one more time won't hurt. By simply installing an after market muffler you will not notice any gains in performance or gas mileage. I know all the manufactures say that you will but what ever gains you might get are so little that you won't be able to feel it. You will however get a much better sound out of your truck, deeper, throatier, very noticable. You'll like the sound so much that you'll be putting your foot into it alot more than you used to just to hear it, thus loosing gas mileage. It takes alot more the just a muffler to get more performance out of your truck. Get a CAI and a custom tune, try electric fans, that stock fan is killing you. With everything that I just mentioned you could get around 20-30 rwhp and more torque. That you will notice. Good luck my friend,

Thank you very much for the advice! I did search both the aftermarket and OEM exhaust forums for SISO questions, but didn't seem to come up with much. I am on a fairly limited budget, so most of your suggestions will have to wait. But I would like to put on the aftermarket muffler and also add a K&N type intake, although I cannot afford the true K&N price, so I am looking at less expensive options. I would love to swap my stock clutch fan for electrics, but I would bet this is a $500.00 upgrade. I really hate my stock clutch fan though. Sometimes it seems to engage for no reason. Anyway - thanks again for the advice!

My pleasure, you would do well just to put in a K&N filter and remove the paper filter, it helps. Just remember, take it slowly with the mods, this can get expensive. You'll get it to where you want it soon enough. And most improtantly, have fun with it.
BTW: sorry about sounding like your dad.

LOL... no problem. I'm in my 30's and a father of two myself. My first add-ons were going to be a muffler, K&N drop-in (which I've done to every truck I've ever owned) and then possibly a tune/chip. From what I can tell, the Flowmaster 50 delta muffler will run me about $85.00 shipped. And as I remember, the K&N drop-ins are $40 to $50. I have already swapped the stocker rims and wheels for something much nicer looking so I don't have much left to spend at this time. I'll probably do the Flowmaster 50 and K&N within the next few weeks.

Thanks again!

That's what I'm doing to my 06 Mustang GT conv. I just bought. Next week it goes in for Flowmaster super 40s and I've already dropped in the K&N filter. the new billet grill just arrived today, can't wait to put it on tonight.
