Oxygen Sensors, when to replace?
Oxygen Sensors, when to replace?
My 99 5.4 has 114,000 miles on it. My mileage seems to be suffering a little bit. I've done all the usual maintenance stuff to the engine (IAC, TB, MAF, fuel filter, air filter, plugs). I'm starting to wonder if the O2 sensors slowly wear out or just quit working. I'm not throwing any codes. What do you guys think, are new oxygen sensors a good maintenance idea with this many miles?
The O2 sensors do wear out. Most people say 30 - 40k change interval.
I am told that the most important of the o2 sensors are the two UPSTREAM (closest to engine) ones. I have not replaced the rear two, but maybe I should (pushing 100K).

Whenever they start switching lazily, or whenever the heater element fails.
Autozone thinks O2 sensors are maintenance items, but they're out to sell parts, not to see that your truck is running properly. Replace 'em if it makes you feel better, but in general, I'd leave 'em alone until they needed replacement, either from slow/no response or a failed heater.
