The best exhaust?

I have an '03 Supercrew with the 4.6 and want an exhaust basically that sounds good. There is a local shop that can make me a SI/DO for $275. Flowmaster 40 series or Magnaflow. Same price for either. The other option is a true dual setup with Flows or Magnaflows. Like I said, not really looking for perf. as much as sound. I know there will be a little, but if I wanted all out perf. I would go with other options. He can install the true duals right off the cats for $350. I can get the pre made stuff for about the same price but prefer to weld, and I dont want the pipes straight out the back. Want them behind the rear wheels. What does everyone think? Which route should I do?

"Sounds good" is really very subjective, depends on who is doing the listening. I have the Flowmaster 40 SIDO and like it very well. I like to hear it but it is not obnoxious to me. Very soft and mellow at cruising speed. Some like the magnaflow for its quietness. The Flowmaster 50 is also quieter than the 40.

Is Flowmaster 40 SIDO the muffler or the entire cat-back?

I like Flowmaster for sound. 40 Series is the better choice. Try the manufactures websites. They have two different sounds.

It's the muffler. And Wildebird, go with the true dual Flowmaster 40 series. That's a great price.

I think the price is pretty good as well. I had the opportunity to listen to the Catback Flowmaster sells with the 50 series muffer and didn't really like the sound. It was louder but.... The guy had the duals straight out the back with the 4" tips. I'm checking with the shop about an H or X pipe as well. I've got another hot rod so if I want perf I just strap into my stroked TA. Its got the Flowmaster 2 chamber as well. I know the sound is in the eye of the beholder, but the sound I'm looking for is similar to the 4.6 Mustangs with true duals, those things sound amazing bone stockwith the Flows. I think I'll never achieve that with the SI/DO. I know the manufacturers make all knids of claims about making horsepower and torque with exhaust but I noticed no difference on the dyno with my bird, so.... Like I said before I'm looking for sound because its my daily driver and I dont want to hop up the truck for horsepower. Thanks for all the replys.

Just to throw anothe .02 in I have a magnaflow siso catback and it sound real nice. I also have had a few tell me that it sounds like a mustang. The truck also has a 4.6l in it so I don't know if that contributes the likeness.

go with the flows...40 series...that's a good price on the true duals, but I've got the single in/ dual out 40 series on my truck and love it...I had the dual pipes turned down behind the tires in the back so that you can't see them and it sounds great...

Just know that everybody likes a little different sound and a muffler shop that knows what they're doing can get you the sound that you want...

Good luck man..._motes

If you want it to sound just like a Mustang, then 40 Series Flowmaster all the way.

Just made the appointment for next week. Going with the true dual 40 series flows. Mine will be turned out behind the rear wheels as well. The shop includes the BIG 4" chrome tips but thats really just not my thing. Who knows it might be cheaper without the tips he provides. I"m bring him an oval 2.5" stainless tip. Thanks for all the help!!

I had a magnaflow exhaust put in by a local shop about 4 years ago. It was a SIDO with both pipes exiting behind the passenger rear tire. It was all aluminized steel tubing. The muffler came with a lifetime warrently and has been replaced about every two years due to rust. I'm due for a third one, but now the tubing is rusted pretty bad, so I'm going to replace the entire exhaust with a stainless. I hope you have better luck with the Flowmasters lasting more than two years.

As far as tips, spend the extra bit of money and get high quality stainless ones or chrome plated stainless. I had the chrome plated steel ones put on and the rust started leaching through in about 6 months. You can polish off the rust, but in a few weeks it is back. Eventaully the coating will fail and start flaking off when the rust builds underneath it. Most of your exhaust is not seen, but the tips are so a few bucks spent on stainless can give you big rewards.

Most people don't know it, but chrome is actually porous and does not provide corrosion protection only wear protection (chrome is very hard) and looks. That is why you see the rust leach through a cheap chrome job. What gives the corrosion protection is a metal plating under the chrome (usually nickel). It is very easy to go light on the nickle or none at all and make a good looking chrome job, but it will fail (rust) in short order. I'm sure most people have seen a truck on the road with a cheap aftermarket chrome bumper that is rusting and the chrome starts peeling off. If you get high quality chrome plated steel tips they will last a long time, but unfortuantely it is impossible to tell a good chrome job from a superficial one.

I'm going to bring in my own tips. SS is the only way to go with them in my opinion. The guy is going to run an x pipe for no additional charge! I cant wait, Next tuesday.

Well I went with the true Dual Flowmaster 40 series. They exit behind the rear wheels at about a 30 angle. Nice and tucked up under there. They sound amazing! Had the guy put in an x pipe as well. 2 year warranty for 350, didn't think that was too bad. There is a little drone at cruising speed but who cares. Its relatively mild though until you ge on it a bit. Little bit more vibration from the tone. You can feel it throughout the truck. All and all I'm totally happy about the purchase. A lot of my friends told me to go with the Maggies for performance but I opted for the flows for the sound. I think there is a little better accelleration but it might just be the sound is there more than before?? Just thought this might help someone elses decision a bit. I think the true duals sound much better than the SI/DO, but again, just my opinion.
