legal?
legal?
I recently put a flowmaster 40 series cat-back SIDO on my 06 f150, and am disapointed with the sound. I hear rice burners that sound better than my truck! It has NO volume whatsoever. So I got to thinking. What are the legal restrictions for exhaust systems on new trucks? I have heard a few new model trucks come through that have some seriosly loud exhaust, gas and diesle-loud as hell. Would it be legal to keep all of the stock exhaust equipment from the engine to the cats, thus preserving emission control, but run a Y pipe out of the last cat which splits to two straight pipes dumping out the back or sides with no muffler, or a glasspack muffler after the last cat then a Y pipe then exit the underside? I am looking for more volume and don't want to buy ANOTHER cat back system (not rich here), but I obviously would still like to pass inspection. Any help would be greatly appreciated. MY truck looks like a BEAST, but sounds like a *******. Hopefully sombody witha little more knowledge could help me out.
Thanks, Robert

No, do not go with Magnaflow. Atleast not for what you are looking for. The best thing you can do is one of these.1. Like you said, do a Y and dual it out. No muffler, and run the pipes back as long as you want. That will def. be loud but it doesnt neccesary mean a good sound. For the best sound and tone, I suggest a IMCO muffler, SI/DO. That is what I had on my 5.4 and it sounds badazz. I had it dumped but u can run it like however you want to. I put this on after a FM40 SI/DO and it made a huge difference in loudness and it has a better, more aggresive tone. Your final option here, and I dont suggest it cause its the most expensive, is run Hi flow cats, these will definetaly sound better and you can still keep the FM catback you have. These are just some ideas, but go with what u can afford, and again, stay away from Magnaflow mufflers for sound. I have one installed and it sounds OK but its not that loud, atleast not as loud as a FM40 and nowhere near as loud as a IMCO 1 chamber.
Good luck
Good luck
Thanks for the help! Don't get me wrong about the flowmaster I have, it sounds as good or better than any truck around running a cat-back system, it just aint loud enough for me. I do like the idea about not using a muffler but I just need to know if it is legal, guess I'll have to get ahold of a local shop and ask them-prob the right approach. Thanks -Robert
some states have muffler and decibel laws so it might not be legal.we don't have either in tennessee so i've ran stright pipes quite a bit.i gutted my cats too we have emissions but i found a way around it,its easy on obd II engines.so you might wanna check on the laws where you live first if you're worried about that.it does sound good though
