What to do with the cats

Hey guys soon this summer Im going to do some different exhaust mods. Should I leave the cats alone or gut them. I'm gonna go with a Catback dual exhaust system. Any suggestions please!!!!!

If you have emissions in your area, you can gut them and still get by since most of the time they will visually inspect a load vehicle to see if it is still using cats. If you don't, and don't have to worry about future emissions posibilities, then by all means have at them!

Magnaflow has some high-flow cats that are only $40-$50. A good muffler shop can weld them right up to anything and you will still be legal (if that matters in your state).

I think the days of taking cats off are over. All the modern day cars/trucks OBD-I & II equipped are too sensitive for those kind of mods anymore. The computers are very sensitive to mods so me personally, I would just replace them with good high flow cats from Magnaflow or Catco. I've learned my lesson about taking cats off, not a good thing for engine performance.

I'm convinced too that one can still have a badass sounding exhaust without even touching the cats. -Mike-

If you do that, it's gonna set your check engine light off. It's no big deal, all you do is buy a set of mil eliminators.(under $15) But I had mine removed, and saw no hp or tq gains. So I really don't see the point, unless you want it louder.

I just gutted my converters last week, and it was a pretty big job. I pulled them right off the truck, bent and removed the heat sheild then used a zipcut to open them up. I pulled out all the catalyst, then welded the sides back on and put everything back together. It definetly sounds awesome with my magnaflow muffler. I used a diablo sport flash programmer to turn off the downstram O2 sensors, but you can build your own O2 sensor eliminator if you wanted.

As for performance changes, nothing really. The only thing i noticed is that the truck coasts for a lot longer when i take my foot off the gas, but thats it. I'd probably do it again to another truck just because it sounds great and didnt cost me anything to do, other than a couple hours on a saturday.

My cats were fouled from a bad tune...

Gutted the pre-cats. Just tapped on the outside lightly with a hammer, and the catalyst substrate disintegrated. Then we just sucked it all out with a shop vac.

Replaced the main cats with two Magnaflows. Passed smog in CA, where there's both a visual and a sniffer and they are smog-*****. And I've also got a blower ...so you shouldn't have any problems with smog in your state.

I think so. Just tap the outside of the cat, you'll hear the stuff inside break apart as you tap it harder. It's like a very brittle honeycomb-type of material.

Just don't hit it so hard that you dent it...

As BAMA mentions, high flows are a good way to go. I got htem on E-Bay for like $60 each.

But if you want to run the main cats, and your stock ones are OK, I wouldn't replace them until they go bad. IMHO there's not a significant gain from going from good factory cats to aftermarket high-flows. The stockers flow pretty well.
