Just want to replace my oem muffler with?

I'm one of those 40 year old guys that is in between the loud pipes I loved when I was younger and a more quiet commuter sound. I want a nice rumble on my 06 Lariat 5.4, but I don't want to be the teenage kid that screams out of the neighborhood every morning.

I'd prefer to go Magnaflow. Would the 12226 be too loud for a guy like me? Or should I go with the 18"? I've heard people here say the 18" was quiter than they thought it would be and I don't want to put a muffler on there that's 'too' quiet. Also, no highway drone would be nice, but I'd like to hear it a little. WOT I've got to hear it.

Recommendations?

I just put a complete Magnaflow system on my 04 Lariat. It sounds great,
and they say there HP and Torque gains. Check out their web site, good information.

Q, I just had Magnaflow 12286 muffler and the 35204 rolled, polished tip welded on this morning. I Got the muffler AND the tip shipped for $103. The welding at the local midas shop was $75. I love it! No drone whatsover, it could actually be a little louder, but I think it does get a bit louder with some miles. I HIGHLY recommend this setup at $175 over a $500+ catback (about $150 if you don't get a polished tip). Believe me, I was in the same place you are in wanting something with a little grumble on the outside and not loud at all on this inside. I actually have to roll down the windows to hear it, but it sounds great from the outside when you get on it a little. Hope this helps.

I had the Magnaflow 12256 18" put on my new 06 5.4L a month ago. Having not heard one before I was a little scared of the 14" 12226. I'm 48 myself and now wish I had gone with the 14" as the 18" is still pretty quiet. Don't get me wrong it has a nice sound but really only under acceleration, while idling or cruising at a constant speed it too quiet. Sure was nice to get that huge boat anchor out from under the truck though. I forgot to measure the old one but I swear its 40" long and 14" diameter compared to the new 5x8x18".

I am very happy with my 12158. I have to mention that I did the cats at the same time and may be too loud to some, but I know there's louder out there. I wasn't looking neccessarily for the loudest, but loud and quality sound. For me it's right on the money. I did the headers this week (JBA).

I have a IMCO performance muffler in place of the stocker on my 04 F150. I went to the same shop that I and all my family has gone to in the past and the manager said that the IMCO would be a little louder than the 18" Maggie, so thats what I went with. With the windows rolled up and the radio on you can hear the exhaust when taking off from sstop lights and if you get on it to pass someone. But when just cruising you can bairly hear it, actually you have to listen for it. But now I am looking to get something just a little louder. One of my buddies just got a glass pack put on his truck, but that drowns alot!!
