Blown Catyalytic converter

I have a 1997 F-150 with the 5.4, and I have noticed an exhaust leak under the passanger side of the truck. I took it to a muffler shop, and they told me that it had a blown catalytic converter. Mine has, (what looks like to be) a 2 resonance chambers and 2 cats. So, I cut off the 2 cats (to make it equal on both sides). I have read threads about that causing problems, but the truck runs fine, and I have no check engine light. Have I made a mistake, or is this ok for my truck?

Hey I have the 97 f150 with a 5.4 and yesterday I cutoff my cats and it sounds bad *** when it goes through my dual flowmasters. I havent seen anything wrong and personally feel like it may have gave me some kick. Im running a full tank of fuel through to see if i still get my typical 14 or 15 mpg.
