Muffler distance from cat.

What are the effects of putting a muffler further or closer to the catalytic converter (or y-pipe)? Is the mounting position mostly a "wherever I can fit it" type of ordeal?

Thanks.

I would guess that the closer the mufflers are to the CATS the hotter they will get. The extra heat makes me think that muffler life may be shortened.

Just a guess.

I was under the truck today and the muffler is right on top of the catalyst :o!

I guess it doesn't matter so much. At least not for a '95 F150

I guess I'm going to have to get creative with my smokestack exhaust idea if I want it to run up the back passenger outer corner of the cab, eh? *doh*
