true dual

what does true dual mean?
I mean I understand there are different ways to do exhaust, I'm just curious as to what that term meant.
thanks

True duals is actually two seperate pipes and two seperate mufflers instead of what most people have, a cat back. A cat back is a where both pipes from each manifold go into a y-pipe, and that pipe goes into a si/do muffler- meaning one pipe goes into the muffler and two come out. That way it looks as if you have dual exhaust. True duals would be where one pipe comes off each manifold and goes into its own muffler and out the back or side, whatever you prefer.

That makes sense.
I would think that true duals would include headers, or is it common to do duals from the manifolds?

Some do some don't just depends on how much money you want to spend. It is already pretty expensive to do true duals without headers, if you buy good stuff.

It's simply a separate exhaust for each bank of the engine. Factory manifolds or aftermarket headers can be used.

Close, but not exactly. A cat back is simply what it says it is, replacement from the cats back. If you have true dual, say like on a fox body mustang from the factory, a catback replaces both mufflers and pipe from the cats back. So a catback only replaces a portion of the exhaust. True Duals are two seperate pipes, one running from each side of the motor. They may or may not have an "H" or "X" pipe in the middle equalizing the pressure

does n e 1 know how well true duals would work on a 4.6 using stock manifolds and cats on their repective sides with original 40 series flowmasters and pipes exiting in front of the rear tires, would i need a x or h pipe to keep the power up. i think i could set it up pretty easy without the x pipes.
