Talking 2000 F150 5.4 4X4 Straight Pipes

Hi Guys,
I was writing in a previous post but did not get really an answer to my question. I am currently running the flowmaster Delta Flow 40 Series 2.5" Single inlet 2.5" dual outlet with 12" long and 3.5" stainless tips exiting behind the rear wheels. Exhaust sounds nice and deep and all, but there really is no volume too it. I do not want to dump too much more money into this exhaust, but have recently talked to a exhaust shop in the chicago area that said to leave my stock cats and run straight pipes with 2.5" pipes. How would this sound, would it be poppy or crackling, or would it have a nice deep rumble to it. If i do go this route, what should i make sure to do, should i use a X or H pipe, remove the factory y pipe? Please let me know A.S.A.P. I am not familiar with how the cats are located on the truck, if they are before the y pipe, on the y pipe, after it or what lol. Any help and suggestions would be great. Not lookin to just pull of cats recklessly, want to be able to pass the emmissions. THanks again Pete

Glad no emissions test today... Since I'm not 100% sure about the 00's my dad has an 01' I'll try to look when he gets home.. But get them to leave stock cats.. X pipe(better flow than h pipe) then 2.5 pipe back.. it'll be loud... and may have some poping and backfiring if you get on the gas hard.. I think if you like loud you'd enjoy it.. I wish I woulda gotten straight pipes..

Yea i wish i would of tried it right away i guess, i paid 180 for the SI/DO Deltaflow 40 to be installed on last friday. That was just for the pipes and labor, i bought the muffler and tips. He said he will convert to straight pipes for 95 bucks. Worth the shot i think, worst thing that could happen is i throw the muffler back on. Is it illegal to not have a muffler, or is it ok as long as its not "disturbing the peace". I am not sure on the chicago laws but the exhaust shop says theres no muffler law. Thanks Pete

well I paid 345 for si/do orginal 40.. 3.5 stainless steel pipes and labor and tax.. Well in alabama you only have to have cats.. so I could have 2 cats and no muff.. They don't care it's alabama.. It depends on your emissions we have no emissions and cops down here think straight pipes sound good so I mean yeah .. i wonder how much it'd cost me to convert to straight pipes?

Im stuck right now between getting the Two high flow cats to see if that will give me the sound i want, they say it should increase sound by 20%. By they i am meaning people on previous threads here. Or running the straight pipes. I heard the High Flows wear out quickly and i dont know what i would do about the oxygen sensors. Will that throw my air/fuel mixture off? I also am afraid of the check engine light danger. Thanks Pete

If i do go with straight pipes i hope they dont go

Your check engine light shouldn't come on..Air to fuel won't screw up either to my knowledge as long as the cats don't wear out.. I'd personally just keep stock cats.. X pipe.. 2.5" pipe back and a K&N air intake and be done.. but after I get my supercharger i'm getting long tube headers, 2 hi flo magnaflow cats, x pipe, 3" pipe back no muffs and 4" stainless steel tips.. if you didn't know stainless steel tips are better more expensive but worth it. Chrome tips wear out in 2 years!

If you have aim or msn or anything hit me up..

Hi,
I want to go that route with the X pipe and 2.5" pipe but im worried that the no muffler part is gonna get me noise violation tickets if they do a visual inspection. Maybe welding in a dummy muffler would do the trick? Anyways I am gonna leave work here and get back on a little later and see what everyone thinks. Thanks for all your input, oh and by the way, DA BEARS!!!

Well since I don't know alot about chicago you might get crap for it.. but you could get a si/do muffler that has nothing in the muffler just like air..

hey there, just thought i would give my 2 cents. i have a 2000 5.4 with true duals... stock cats... cut out the y pipe. put in a H pipe to balance out the exhaust pulses and pressures. didnt lose much bottom end ( i have a superchips tuner, volant intake, and the exhaust with 3.55 gears and 33" in tires. after the H pipe i have 2 6in glass packs with 45''s (out the corners of the bumper) stainless steel tips. when i first drove it it was a quieter low growl now that the glass packs are losing their packing it sounds great.. loud but not too loud.. and a nice tone lower tone that means business!

x i guess tech is better but by switching them out your not going to notice a differance. sound or power wise. i believe most shops would prefer putting in an H pipe because of the ease to make and find room, it may be cheaper for an H depending on where ya go but no matter what i have owned both with in 4k miles of each other and on the same truck/ exhaust system and i didnt notice any differance by switching

thanks for the info, does the h pipe eliminate all the poppyness of the exhaust? Thats all i really care for, an f150 isnt a race car, so im not doin it really for performance. Thanks Pete

Hey guys,
I decided on going a different route yet again. I am going in tomorrow to get the exhaust cut off again. I am gonna have that nasty stock Y pipe removed and replaced with two pipes going into 2 Dynomax Bullet Race Mufflers exiting behind the rear tire with 2 magnaflow 3.5" tips 12" in length. Also will be slapping in a H Pipe to equalize the exhaust pressure. I am hoping this is gonna give me the sound i am looking for. I heard some clips of straight pipes and they are not as deep as the flows so im hoping by a Bullet muffler which in essence is just a top end glasspack, it will be loud yet retain that deep sound. I will let you all know what i think about it after i get it done tomorrow. Thanks Pete

Hey JJ,
I called one place here in chicago that is known for custom work and being cheap and they said 250, I then called my body man who does most of the work on my classic vehicles and told me he would do the whole thing for 140, 40 for the pipes that I will need, and 100 for the hour and a half labor. He told me he will use the existing dual pipes that are after the muffler and just attach the new pipes to them that way saving some money. Hope that helps, I will keep everyone informed. By the way, i got the dynomax bullets from Summit racing, they were the 12 in body, 16inch in overall length 2.5in/outlet for 33.98 each. Had them overnighted should be here in the morning. Thanks Pete
