Magnaflow 5x8x14" Aluminized Installed

I had a Magnaflow 5x8x14" Aluminized installed with the stock pipe on my 2005 5.4L 4x2 Scab yesterday. It sounds quite good to me. It is not overly loud and I haven't detected any annoying drone at the very limited amount of highway speeds I have been at so far.

I will likely do a kit later - likely the new SIDO for the HD that will be available in 4-6 weeks.

Anyone care to speculate on what I am giving up in performance and sound by sticking with the stock pipe?

Thanks,
Rooster

I do not know much about the new kit that's going to soon be available except that it is
listed on the Magnaflow website.

Check their listings for your truck:

If you can find a performance shop / muffler shop that uses a mandred bender you can probably get them to build a custom cat-back. You need to make sure it is 304 stainless all the way and if possible they clamp on the front extension pipe. Also, they need to weld the SS with pure argon and SS filler. It is imperative to preserve the pureness and eliminate any dissimilar metal contact to curtail any galvanic corrosion from eventually causing joint leaks or worse.

This approach would likely be more expensive than a kit cat-back but is an option. Finding a good shop to do such work might be difficult.

Have you called magnaflow and spoken to a customer rep? They must have had inquiries over the last three years. They might have a work-around or solution for your cat-back desires.

If no existing magnaFlow kit is adaptable to your 7700, I would at least check out the local shops and see if they can do a kit-comparable priced custom exhaust with 304 SS
and pure argon welds.

You will get a little drone after the muffler breaks in a little. I know mine did, but its not bad at all. You can still listen to the radio at acceptable levels and carry on a conversation when need be.

Thanks for the heads up. If it doesn't get much more pronounced than it is now that will be no problem.

03' 7700, would it be possible for you to get a kit for an extended cab short box, and just cut out a little bit or pipe, or weld a little peice in to make up for the difference in length?
Dont take my word on it, but I see no idea why it wouldn't. The only place I would think there would be any difference between kits for these trucks with different cab/box configurations would be the length of pipe between the rear axle bends, and the y pipe. So like I said, I would think by simply adding a little bit, or cutting out a little bit of pipe, that you could make one fit.

Magnaflow should be able to answer that for sure, or someone like Mike Troyer maybe.

409's a less cathodic SS than 304. 409 actually contains some iron and will rust. 304 is in the 18-8 class and won't rust. This doesn't mean that 409 is necessarily a bad choice. It would be in a corrosive environment (salt spray or salt on the road).

Check out galvanic corrosion. This is how welds will sometimes "fail". The weld filler itself can rust out if non 308 filler is used to weld 304 piping. It gets deeper than that. How many muffler shops are going to have 308 filler and pure argon to weld 304 mufflers/pipes? The exhaust system will only be as long-lived as its worse weld...

I am not even close to being a metal guru but became quite familiar with it being involved with aircraft for 25+ years.
