2 magnaflows, which and why....

Looking to replace my stock muffler. Wanting to go magnaflow.

I am trying to decide between these 2 mufflers.
12216 which is a 5X8 oval 14" long 2.5 center i/o
12246 which is a 5X8 oval 18" long 2.5 center i/o

I have a 97 f150 with 4.6. stepside bed which has my exhaust exiting on the passenger side before rear tire. i plan on putting a muffler on and a nice stainless dual outlet tip with slash cut.

I am looking for a sound that is louder than stock, but i don't want obnoxious. i want to know it is a V8 in the truck and be able to hear it when i go WOT. but, i don't wnat alot of drone inside the cab at cruising speeds.

What is the difference in the length of these going to do for the sound?

thanks!

The 18" will be quieter. The least drone will come from the 24" muffler. The 18" will have good volume and not much drone. The 14" will be very loud on your 4.6.

18" or the 24" will be the two to look at. I have the 24" on a 05 4.6 supercab and it sounds nice, maybe too quiet for a motorhead but nice sound at wot. At idle and cruising you can notice the difference over stock but its not loud at all. See if a local exhaust shop will let you hear the difference on your truck between the two, they might not but it couldn't hurt to ask.

thanks for the responses! If the 14" is going to cause alot of drone, i will stay away from it. it is my personal daily driver, but also have a baby to carry around some times in it...so i don't wnat something that will drive him nuts!! ha ha

I think i will go 18" from the sound of it. SHould be right at what i am looking for. i don't want to spend $140 to get something not much louder than i got...and the 24" sounds like it would do that.....so 18" it is!

Thanks guys!

I had a 14" SISO on my 02 5.4 that was (to me) rediculously quiet. I then went with an 18" SIDO and it is considerably louder.

I know it doesn't make sense, but thats the way it is on my 02.

your stock setup exited before the tire? Just wondering, what is the length of your stock muffler? I'm doing the exact same research. I'm going for a similar setup but I'm looking for a nice chrome dual rolled tip.

I have a '99 F150 4.6 with the Magnaflow cat-back installed - 24inch muffler. It's got a nice growl at WOT with a very modest rumble at low rpm. There is a little droning in the cab at hwy speeds but not bad.

Haven't noticed any performance improvement unfortunately(which I expected)
