To pipe or not to pipe.

Hey guys,

I just got my dads 1998 f-150 with a 5.4l, extended cab, and 4x4. I went to a muffler shop and for $340 canadian they will run some true duals with the factory cats in place with 14" glasspacks. I just can't decide if I should do it, worried it will be too loud and wake up the neighbors when I leave for work in the morning. But I have also always wanted to put pipes on a truck, this is my first truck with a V8 and being worthy of pipes. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

If that was me I'd do it but i wouldn't have glass packs i'd just run true straight pipes right from the cats..

Thats the exact same set up that I have on my 97 5.4. It sounds really good and theres not many other trucks running that setup around here. Im about to redo it thou and put a shorter glass pack on it. I wouldnt worry about wakin up neighbors just be a easy on it till you get away.

Can't you avoid it by not getting on it hard or is it really that loud?

I have a bolt-on cat-back exhaust on order, expecting it by Tuesday or Wednesday. I went ahead and pulled off the existing exhaust all the way up to the cats. It is now running on manifolds and cats-nothing else. Even this isn't very loud. With full tailpipes and mufflers it shouldn't be too loud like your afraid of. Thes 5.4 engines are just quieter than most. You should be fine. It will rumble pretty good, but is by no means obnoxious.

hey,

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I am thinking of definately doing this to the truck, and I am glad that it won't be too loud with the glasspacks. I was just wondering if any of yours got too rappy once the glasspacks burnt out a bit? Thanks again.

Well from what I know glasspacks are pretty cheap so if they burn out buy new ones! best of luck to you!

the 4 cats quiet the truck down alot. try taking out the front 2 pre cats if you want it a little louder.

my friend just had true duals put on his 5.4 exiting in front of the rear wheels and wasnt happy with how quiet it was so he went and got all 4 cats taken out. if u want loud exhaust...address the cats. they are very restrictive.

Hey,

Ya I just don't want to mess around with any of the sensors. The guys at the muffler shop strongly suggested leaving both cats and all sensors right where they are. I am def gonna go for it when I get the truck, will let u know how it turns out.

thanks
