Short-Term Exhaust Removal- OK?
I know this has been mentioned before for long-term use, but I will only be doing it for a day or so...
I have a Magnaflow cat-back coming (should be here by Tue.-Wed.) and I'd like to go ahead and take my current exhaust off now. I know where the new exhaust will slide on, so I was going to take the existing pipe off in preparation for the new system. Would it hurt anything to drive it like this for a day or three? The exhaust would essentially be missing right after the cats. I realize it wouldn't sound great, but I'd like to find out what it would sound like, just don't want to mess anything up. I figure that the Y and cats should provide enough restriction and scavenging effect to not burn valves, etc?
Thoughts?

my friend ran open headers on his SS camaro for almost two weeks. hardest part is not getting pulled over for noise violation. then they take a peek and see no exaust system.
There shouldnt be any problem if you take stuff off past they Y pipe i personally wouldnt go closer then that to the motor.
And if you drive long enough for the computer to "learn" how to run with a lack of alot of back pressure, it may take a little while after you get your new exaust put on. usually 30 minutes of driving will give the computer long enough to figure out what you just did to it.

don't worry about it all. I ran with it it cut off after the y-pipe for several weeks with no problems whatsoever. In fact, right now, im running no cats and no mufflers with no problems at all, my check engine light isnt coming on either. So for you, go ahead and take it off. good luck!
I went ahead and pulled it off. It isn't really even that loud. I wouldn't mind at all if it was this loud all the time, I just don't really like the tone. It isn't too bad, though.
The back pressure caused by your exhaust aids the upper valve train in its function. Removing all that pressure witha n open system leaves the valvetrain open for error. About 25% of those who do this report issues. Its kinda like russian roulette. He who dies, dies bad!
"Backpressure" doesn't really exist. It is a generalized term referring to scanvenging, flame fronts, and combustion processes. I don't really understand how it all works, but I belive that between the factory manifolds and all four converters it isn't all that risky. I believe the main concern with this setup is extracting the necessary heat from the cylinder so that valves don't get burnt.
I may throw it back on just to ease my mind. It wasn't at all hard to remove, I really expected to struggle with it. I was just hoping to get it off before I got my new system so that I could install it right away when it gets here!

I did something like that, I cut my exhaust off at the y pipe, and drove around for 2 days till the exhaust shop could open, and well it didn’t hurt the truck, the sound in the cab is deafening to the point that it hurts to accelerate. My truck is an 96 so it might be different
