They are just cheaply painted, they'll work as good as any other though. The heat will burn through the black paints and leave a rusty header, but hell you can't hardly see them with all the crap in the engine bay these days anyway.
I was just looking at those yesterday for my 97 Expy. I'm also here in MN and I don't think they would last long with the salt. I know of a company called New Images that does Ceramic coating. I think they are in Centerville near Forest Lake MN. A couple years ago I looked into getting a manifold coated for my '56 ****** 4 cyl and they quoted me $80.00. Maybe its worth it. The rep at Summit told me that the footnote for the Summit headers said that some exhaust fabrication may be required. He read the Flowtech notes and they said that it was a direct bolt on to factory exhaust pipe. That leads me to believe that the Summit headers don't match up to the stock pipe.
Thanks for the reply. I can't believe they'd make them to not bolt up to a stock cat-pipe, that makes no business sense. I think I'll just get some and hit them with a high temp paint before installation. Ceramic coating for a pair off your quote would be around $160, thats puts total cost (shipping, etc...) at like $320 and to me thats just not worth it for the minor gains possible with shorties. I'd put the stockers back on long before then, and I'll be looking long-tube if I decide to spend that much at some point....
I'm concerned with corrosion too but if they last 3-5 years I'll probably have something else in mind by then anyway....
Let me know how they work. My manifolds might be warped and they are spendy. I just heard back from Pace Setter and the rep told me to get the coated ones because the painted wont hold up to the salt. I have used ceramic high temp paint on manifolds before and it never flaked or burnt off like standard high temp paint I've used in the past. The ceramic spray paint is available at most stores now.

When I looked at PaceSetter's website they list the coated headers at $545...
Thats a whole ****load of money for something that is only likely to give a handful of hp, if you don't already have a tuner, e-fans, intake kit, pulleys, etc... you could get a helluva lot more bang for those bucks....
I agree. The only reason I was looking at headers at all is because when I do gaskets on mine the manifolds may end up being warped. I didn't want to spend the $350.00 to get them from Ford. I've found new manifolds for $45.00 each on internet so thats what I'll do if mine are shot. Thanks.

summit headers
over the summer i got their shorty headers.as of now i havent had a problem with them. but i will tell you that putting them on is a little annoying (ok i thought it was a pain). just so you know put the truck up of stands and remove the wheel&wheel wells you do most of the work either under the truck or through the wheel wells. on my 2002 4.6 the passenger side was alot(and i stress alot) harder to put on then the drivers side. really the hardest part was gettn the factory manifolds off but a little creativity and a sawzall helped me. the drivers side was cake. my advise is patience and start this when you have some time. and oh ya the summit headers are just painted black so if you have access to a sand blaster or a bead blaster blast that paint off or do what i did and just let them smoke till the paint is off they dont look so good without the paint but you really cant see them
I have a set of the summit shorty headers on my 98 f150 and the first day i had them most of the paint chiped off so im going to paint them with header paint now but they did bolt right up with no problem but one of the header flanges did have a leake but i fixed that. Good luck with the install.
