Can an aftermarket exhaust help my MPG?

1997 F150 XLT 4.6 4X2

Worndering if I was to get an aftermarket exhaust if it would help my MPG? I mean if I wasn't leadfooted with it,I am curious to know if the reduced backpressure and improved flow helps at all.

(Coming from the 4cyl. world it did help in those applications.)

Looking for feedback from folks that have made the swap.

thx!

It would help your gas mileage maybe 1-2mpg if you drive it like how you do now..

i only got around 1/2 MPG better, and this is the norm, you might get better or you might not see any change at all, good luck

I doubt you'll see 2 mpg, maybe a small gain but thats ~15%+. Plus, what does "exhaust" mean to you? Just a catback? Catback and mid-pipe? Those plus headers? Compare the cost of the parts to the potential savings and it will likely take many years to get close to recouping the investment. Buy exhaust for the sound you want, not to "save" money....

(unless this thread was meant as a tool to convince your wife that you could save money by putting exhaust on the truck, in which case its the best mod possible ever (until the next one), will give you at least 5 mpg gain and 30 hp, make other people want to be your friends, and even make her hair prettier and her ***** bigger.... )

In all seriousness though, you probably won't see much gain though. I actually lost mpgs, guess I need to keep my foot outta the gas, I like to stomp it and watch everybody stare or gimme a thumbs up and stuff.

Yup, like he said. In theory an exhaust might help MPG but the new cool sounds will have you hammering down much more often thus decreasing actual mileage. Hehehe
